Coal-Fired Power Plant Contaminates Air In Naga City, Cebu

My wife commented last night to me, that since we have been back to Florida that I have not had a problem breathing and have not had to use my inhaler even once, so I realized that since that plant came online, every time we are in Cebu I get chest congestion that lasts most of our 4 month stay, so I am wondering if the problem persists or not in Cebu City, and is anyone else finding that they have the same problem since I think Naga is close enough IMO for the polluted air to get to the city? Another thing I am wondering is if anyone knows if the ash is being used in the city to build buildings or as fill, and if so how that might cause problems for me and others? CEBU CITY — Engineer Vic Obando, his wife and three daughters wake up every morning knowing that every second of their life, they are breathing in toxic chemicals that may cause a myriad of illnesses.Obando, a retired employee of the National Power Corporation, lives within the 15-kilometer radius from a 100-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Naga City, Cebu. What’s worse is that with the power plant’s lack of facility to contain the highly toxic coal ash, a byproduct of coal, it found a novel idea of distributing it to residents as building materials and even to be used in government infrastructure projects as filling materials.

Perhaps they should be making 'cinder blocks' with the ash. I'd use it. They used to make concrete cinder blocks back home with it (I think) and once it binds with the concrete I can't imagine it being harmful.

I am just the opposite of Kuya Lee. Out here in Oz I suffer respiratory problems all the time, asthma, bronchitis, sinus congestion, and hay fever. Being a heavy smoker does not help at all I know, but the interesting thing is, whenever I am in the Philippines, with the hot humid air, I am right as rain, and virtually all these complaints disappear entirely, no matter where in the Philippines I am, whether it be Cebu City, Manila or out in the provences. It just totally disappears. It comes back again as SOON as I am o the plane home, and for years I was blaming the insecticide crap they spray inside, before you land back in OZ. Someone else suggested it could be the air con itself in the plane which sets it off all over again ?? I know the hot humid climate in the Philippines is a LOT better for my arthritis as well, and with my breathing, I put that down to the humidity, and the air always being somewhat moist. Anyone got any ideas ?

I have never heard of spraying anything on a plane before landing anywhere. When I used to live in Victoria Australia hay fever was a curse, after moving north that was the end of it.

Well, I have been to the Philippines eight times, since 1998 till 2009, and they sprayed the plane every single time, on re entry to Australia. Something to do with 'quarantine laws" They do not do it flying out, only coming in ! I never suffered with Hay Fever or Asthma either until about five years ago, now I get it all the time. maybe because I am older now, or maybe it is also because i also have Rheumatoid Arthritis, which affects the immune system. I certainly suffer it with a vengeance now ! Another point, my wife and son also have asthma and get hay fever worse than me, but both of them are fine when they are in the Philippines ! I just put it down to the humidity, being better on the airways.

They are trying to build one of those killer coal-fired plants in Subic bay, but getting a lot of opposition from the locals, i hope it doesnt happen. i would sell everything cheap and pack up and leave if it got approved. that would be a slow death to the local population. :( ej.

Silly as it sounds you might be right there too ! I am sure the Filipino smokes would have a lot less added chemicals to them, than what they put into them out here. By the same token though, how do you explain my wife's and my sons symptoms being the same, and neither of them smoke ?
