One thing you do NOT see with the Philippines versus other retiree places...retired married "couples" moving there. In Costa Rica, and Panama...sure there were a lot of sexpats...but living there?...I'd say most were married couple expats. My issue would be politics with them, and if I was married and old with an old wife from the states, I would be socializing with them, or would I?...hahah. Even Thailand has a load of retired or "white" couples living, working and retired there. Philippines seems to be a haven for single men, or a expat married to a pinay. I can't name one expat couple living in the Philippines. Regarding the woman?...haha...well, beauty is all over the world. IMHO, the total package is the latina, looks and personalty/culture...best looking?...imho, a pretty blonde with a rack. I sometimes find filipinas too submissive, and probably why you find so many my way or highway alpha arsehole single sexpats living here. Another issue with the filipina versus other woman...the size, and being too small, petite. While absolutely stunning in cuteness...I once dated a woman 4'9 in Cebu and actually broke it off because I felt like a perv with her, despite the fact she was 35. Personally, I need my woman to have a backbone and make some decisions at times..and be over 5'4. :bash:

Valid point but expat couples do exist in the Philippines. Rare it is but Hashers will know Disco Dick and Dribbles Weekly. There are likely others but it takes an unusually good relationship for an expat couple to thrive here. Edited by Dave Hounddriver

So could I then ask those of you who have been to, and have knowledge of Costa Rica and other retirement areas besides the Philippines, Why would the Philippines be your choice?
Military bases...english a bit better? Lee, why did you start doing the pen pal thing with a pinay? ...instead of another area of the world? I've read your story of your first visit after years of snail mails...just never knew why you chose the Philippines for a bride.
Well when I first did the pen pal thing, I was not looking for a wife and was looking for places in Asia to move to since I was already retired from my first job and had just gotten divorced from my first wife. I was brought up a good part of my early years in Asian cultures, so I already knew back then that China and Japan would not work out for me because of the family issues of not allowing foreigners in, and because of the country issues of Japan not being friendly to foreigners moving there, and China not being a place I wished to move, so that left other countries I received letters from, and my current wife just seemed too good to not meet, and the rest was history. There was a lot more to the story but I do not wish to write my usual book. :bash: I can honestly say that in the beginning, I had no intention of bringing someone to the US, but complicated issues with property because of the divorce etc, made it impossible for me to leave at the time, so once I met Nila, and once I got to see a lot of Mindanao, I asked her to come back to the US with me and she refused and wanted us to live in the Philippines, which was my original plan, so I could not blame her for wishing to stick to it. I guess if she would have stuck to her guns, then I might have had to give up the property I still partially owned with my x, and would have moved to Cagayan de Oro, but her coworker convinced her to moved to the US with me, and so began the back and forth travels because the deal I made with her and her family was that I would bring her back at least once every two years. Now to get back to my question, I would have moved to the Philippines because I fell head over heals in love with Nila upon spending a few weeks with her walking around the city, and then visiting with her family members in Mindanao and spending time with them, and that was in spite of how primitive many lived, and we did look at possibly building a home in her families village, and we looked at homes in Cagayan de Oro during that time and I probably could have made it all work because beautiful American style homes were between one million and two million pesos back then, but I would have been running away from the US and would not have been moving to the Philippines because I felt it was a paradise, because it is not, and probably never will be. So my answer is because of A woman.

While reading yet another story about Costa Rica, one thing that stands out against the Philippines is that it appears Costa Rica has many beautiful beaches, and another thing is they actually have lots of wildlife. I hardly ever see large birds flying around in the places in the Philippines that my wife and I have traveled, and lush green like in the photos is not something we have come across during our travels either. The best place to retire isn't Costa Rica or the Philippines. It is prison. You get three meals a day, a cot and healthcare. Unfortunately, Social Security will stop sending your monthly checks if you are incarcerated for more than 30 days. You will need another income source for cigarette money. JJR

Sure will, being there is not many, if any, other couples to communicate with. In Costa Rica they have entire areas of retired couples, as they do in Mexico, Panama ect...thus making the culture shock less taxing. All third world countries have the temptations .... :bash: BTW, I have seen a few white woman, some young, working out in the metro gym out here in Davao...I was told they are red cross volunteers. Not sure if they are married or what as I only seen them alone.

Costa Rica has not destroyed all their jungles, and promotes the hell out of tourism. Another aspect...getting around in Costa Rica for tourists is a lot easier being it is landlocked. In the Philippines, you are always on some Island, and if you want to get to a place that is nature locked of beauty, it is a bit more difficult to get to.

Very cool...maybe a thread for those who met their wives with pen and paper....sounds very interesting as to how that entire thing would work compared to the modern day internet. :bash:
