When if ever will it ever end? 11/25/2011 A senior United Nations official yesterday expressed deep concern over the plight of Filipinos displaced by armed hostilities in strife-torn Mindanao and urged the Philippine government and the Muslim rebels currently locked in peace negotiations, to protect them from armed conflict. Clashes recently resumed between government troops and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), bringing uncertainty on the future direction of the peace talks between the two sides. The MILF, which used to be part of a larger secessionist group, had been waging rebellion in the Southern Philippines since 1969, in one of Asia’s longest-running insurgencies. The armed hostilities that spanned more than four decades have claimed at least 120,000 lives, brought massive destruction to property, and crippled the region’s economy.
