The judge ruled that the mother, who was the petitioner in the case, had no legal standing to petition because her and the father were separated. The ruling was really more about who has legal standing to petition the court on behalf of children when the parents are legally separated than it was about the marriage itself. The outcome of the judge's ruling is that the marriage can stand, but he did not rule specifically that the marriage was legal. If he had been asked, I suspect he would have nullified it. I think this marriage will be nullified, it just wasn't done in this case. The Saudis are at least making some effort to eradicate the practice of child marriage, but it's going to take time. Child marriage has been their way of life for many, many years. It's not going to go away overnight. On the positive side, there were assurances that the marriage would not be consummated until the girl reached puberty. When she reaches puberty, she can file for divorce if she chooses. Provided the marriage is not consummated prior to puberty, it's really no different than any other arranged marriage.Every culture has negative traits when viewed from an outside perspective. I'm sure many conservative Islamic countries wonder how gay marriage/civil unions can be accepted and tolerated, yet many western countries condone the practice. I'm sure that looks just as strange and inexplicable to them as arranged child marriage looks to you and I. I try not to get too worked up over how things are done in other cultures. I've got enough to worry about with issues in my home and adopted country to worry too much about Saudi Arabia.
