Why So Many Fires?

There seem to be so many bad fires here, the result of packing too many people together, unsafe cooking habits, unsupervised children, arson, etc. Very sad. Most of the houses are concrete but what's inside can burn in a matter of seconds and I wouldn't count on having several fire companies with sirens blasting to the rescue. Yesterday, I bought a basic fire extinguisher and a couple of smoke alarms, things I took for granted in the states. In the several months I've been here I haven't had a smoke alarm, maybe the hotels, not sure about that. What, if anything, are you doing to prevent fires in your homes?

A lot of the fires break out in squatter areas due to bad or illegal wiring, then ofcourse no space between houses and the whole place goes up.Here in Australia smoke detectors are compulsorily in all rented premises. One of our members here who has not been around for awhile but keeps contact on Facebook has spent sometime training firefighters in Cebu.He also arranges donations of equipment so the service at least in Cebu has improved.post-1-0-05374200-1325629114_thumb.jpg post-1-0-08119800-1325629117_thumb.jpg post-1-0-99248600-1325629118_thumb.jpg post-1-0-25698300-1325629122_thumb.jpg post-1-0-80889800-1325629127_thumb.jpg post-1-0-16523700-1325629132_thumb.jpg post-1-0-58853000-1325629390_thumb.jpg

Many years ago when we had the Navy offpost housing contract in olongapo, fire extinguishers were mandantory, and fire hydrants were required at every fifth dwelling to protect the military tenants and their dependents. Now without the USmilitary around, fire extinguishers are still required by local government for rental apartments. This i know because we just spent a small fortune on a 3 year upgrade. I wouldnt be surprised if the hydrants have been turned off over the years. tanks EJ. :23_11_60[2]:
