I am sorry for their loss but I have to wonder why a TV and refrigerator were more important than an ATM card, cash and important documents. Such a shame so many are now homeless. 15 years of hard work lost in an hourThe family lost P3,000 cash and documents like birth certificates, ATM cards, and marriage contracts to the fire. However, they were able to save their refrigerator and television.

First off, fortunate no one was injured. This part of the article caught my attention.

He said he hopes they can rebuild, but he is not sure whether the government, the lot owner, will allow them.
Living 15 years on a property you are uncertain about if you can legally stay on?

Come on Mr. Lee ..... you already know the answer to that ..... Filipinos love to eat and watch the new Willie show "Wil Time Big Time" on the TV ...... hence "save the ref and TV" ...... joke langA great many people are disappointed after a fire like this as they go back to the original title holders for them to be able to rebuild ...... so if they buy or just squat on the property with out having the title changed they will not be allowed to rebuild no matter how long they have lived there ...... if the original owner wants to be nice (or is not dead) he can help clear up the problem ...... if not he gets his property back ...... have been having lots of fires here in Cebu lately and the news is full of people crying because they will not be allow to rebuild due to not being able to prove ownership ...... sad but with so many people just squatting on property belonging to someone else it is necessary ...... that is why it is so important to have a piece of property checked out here before buying ....

One could almost get the idea that you have a suspicion the fires are 'encouraged' by the title holders of the land. I share that suspicion and it seems the law needs to change where fire is concerned. Of course the same outcome occurs when there is a flood but, to the best of my knowledge, no title holder has been able to start a flood.

Dave ... I have a couple of my thoughts on the squatting issue ...... first what gives these people the right to think they can just move onto someone else s property and live there ..... but it may stem from the idea that if someone owns something it should belong to everyone ..... (unless of course they own it) ..... they are rich and we are poor ..... we need it more than they do ...... their not using it so I will ...... but I have no where else to go (probably the best answer but still not exceptable ..... IMHO) ......So how did it all start ..... well I personally saw one such settlement get started ... where we used to live .... a nicely cared for lot with lots and lots of banana trees and a beautiful jackfruit tree and one family living on it with a fairly nice small house ..... I understand that the lot was owned by a OFW and not living here ..... with in the 2 years that we lived there the one family became 5 .... they chopped up the jackfruit tree for fire wood .... managed to kill most of the banana trees and were raising fighting cocks and dogs .... the new families just threw up shanties and they were burning rubber from old tires at night ...... I can imagine what it looks like now ..... they also closed in the front and back of the property with old corrugated tin and bamboo posts ..... and of course the normal herd of goats and chickens .....Now in fairness to the squatters why the hell do the land owners wait so long to throw these people off their land ...... is it because of the law ...... they don't know what is going on (as in the case of the OFW) or are they non caring or to damn lazy ..... sadly I have been told that as a foreigner it is almost impossible to remove these people if they are on your (wife's) property .....Burning them out ...... god I hope not ...... there has to be another way .... but even the government can't get rid of them without a riot and promises to pay for relocation fees to people that had no business to be there in the first place ...... yea I know .... I haven't absorbed all the culture of the Philippines ...... :541: :hystery: :hystery:

It could be that they thought they had time to get everything but as it says, spread quickly. One has to picture the scene, crowded, tacked on houses basically joining each other, smoke flames yelling screaming panic, its not like just a relaxing house burning party so what is going on in the minds of those caught up may not be rational thinking. It does say he secured his children first which at least resulted in no deaths. Maybe the area of the house which had the cash etc was well alight before he got a chance to grab anything.Anyway I doubt if it was a case of save the ref and TV,bugger the rest.

I agree with you on important documents, they can be a real pain in the arse to replace as I found out several years ago when I had my wallet stolen in AZ. And that was only drivers license, Mil I'D, and ATM card, oh and Motorcycles safety card which is needed on any federal installation, I had to give up a weekend and retake the course so I could replace that. As Bruce suggested a fireproof box would be a must. I have one now that I keep all my important stuff in. For this story good news is everyone got out ok.

There is no such thing as SQUATTER'S RIGHTin the Philippines. They had this land program years ago that tenants could own part of the land, but that was stopped few years ago.
