Genius Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Simple because you are the equivalent of a Mexican tourist in border town America I.e barely tolerated. If you don't like it, you can leave. But please spend your money first and come again!

Thats the dumbest law ever..... When will it be changed????If that is the way you feel, why are you in the Philippines in the first place?I am happy with the law as it is. I am sure if I had a gun, I would already be in prison for shooting some of the foreigners I have met.Regards: Jim
Genius Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Ha, I also believe I should have the right to carry various instruments of mass destruction. I particularly would like a portable nuclear device, or maybe one of those grenade launchers. That'll teach them to do me out of 5 peso at the cigarette stand. I do not know what it is, but it seems to be a particularly American sentiment to want to be armed to the teeth, wherever they are in the world. Its not something, as a European, I ve ever particularly understood. ( No offence to your constitional rights, american buddies out there). Anyway, I think Hell will freeze over before firearms become legally available to your, average foreigner.

Dave Hounddriver Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Is there anywhere in the world that mentioning non military/police people and guns does not stir up the same endless argument? Has anyone ever learned anything or had their opinion changed by any of these arguments? THAT would be interesting.
Garpo Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 If you are going to live here and married to a Filipino than she can certainly own the weapon and keep it in your house. Not even citizens can carry guns unless it is part of their business or job required such as security guard, police officer, etc. etc. etc.I actually tried to find an incident where a foreigner who was married and living in the Philippines used a firearm in the defense of his property or a threat to his life but was not able to locate one. My own opinion is that if I choose to need a weapon then it would be owned by my wife and keep in a secure area of our residence. If I had to use the weapon to defend my wife and property then I would use it and take my chances in court if I was to get arrested

Popular Post Steve & Myrlita Posted March 6, 2012 Popular Post Posted March 6, 2012 (edited) So if someone is shooting at my family or stealing from us or our live is in danger we do not have the right to defend ourselves???? Thats the dumbest law ever..... When will it be changed???? The real question is... As a Foreigner do I have the right to defend myself? The answer is NO not really. I agree. One thing I've noticed fairly consistantly with many of the expats I've met and / or talked to, there seems to be a perception that the basic rights we all have in our own countries (1st World) are universal and absolute anywhere we go. The harsh reality is that is not true. Many countries on this planet have few if no rights for it's own citizens never mind foreigners. Many expats don't realize just how overly proud and nationalistic the RP truly is. Yes, the RP has many of the same rights our countries do except for one important point. Those rights only apply to it's natural born RP citizens only. They DO NOT apply to foreigners. For example, in the US, everyone including foreigners have the right to free speech as our constitution guarantees that right to all who are on US soil. No so in the RP. A foreigner can be arrested, jailed, deported, & blacklisted just for stating his or her opinion here. Heck, an actor (I think his name was Alec Baldwin) was blacklisted from entering the RP just for making a joke about Filipinos and he wasn't even in the RP. In fact, I'm risking the same just by writing this. I have found that many locals don't even want us here. They tolorate us because of our perceived wealth they think we have and want some of it. Ok. I'll get off my soap box now....Edit: Thank you Mike B for the correction on Alec Baldwin. Edited March 6, 2012 by Steve & Myrlita
