Philippines, US to hold war games near Spratlys(My comment:) This was discussed in an older thread here. But it is time to bring it to the forefront because it really looks like the US is the one pushing the Philippines to claim the Spratleys. I say this because how in the heck is the Philippines going to challenge the US in 'war games'. Seems thinly disguised as a US initiative. For full story click here. The Philippines will hold large-scale military exercises with the United States next month near an area where it is locked in a tense sea territorial row with China. The maneuvers, an annual event which this year will involve nearly 7,000 troops, will reinforce the close military ties between the longtime allies, Armed Forces Chief Lieutenant General Jessie Dellosa said Wednesday.“The cooperation between the two armed forces manifests the unswerving dedication and commitment of our security forces toward a more stable and secure Asia-Pacific region,” Dellosa said in a statement.

I agree with your suspicion. The US foreign policy is usually trying to insert a square peg in a circular hole.Recent saber rattling from Iran and strong hints of surgical strikes from Israel and US would make the oil inthe Persian Gulf go up in smoke. In spite of a small navy, the Iranians can still choke off the Strait of Hormuz. It will take a few weeks before the western navies can reopen it, while the world oil prices hit the roof.Preliminary oil explorations in the Spratley Island groups (just west of Palawan) indicate oil reserves biggerthan the Persian Gulf. It is my hope that further drilling will come up with nothing more than a few whale chits. This black oil is killing Mother Nature -- Jake
