Okieboy Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 THE City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) said Saturday that the reason behind banning the use of plastic bags and polystyrene foams in Davao City is more of a health concern. Fortunato de Castro Jr., head for the information education campaign unit of Cenro, said the strict implementation of Section 7, Article V of the Ordinance 0361, series of 2010 or the Davao City Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance of 2009 starting June 28 is not only geared toward lessening the amount of garbage disposal. Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos. He said plastic bags and polystyrene foams are by-products of crude oil, and if ingested, can be detrimental to human's health. "Imagine ang pagkain mo nakalagay sa Styrofoam (Imagine your food is served in the Styrofoam container)," he said. The official recommended the use of laminated cartons as food and beverage containers, instead of plastic and polystyrene foams. Those who violate the provision starting June 28 will be fined P300 and have to undergo a mandatory seminar for first offense; P500 and a five-day community service for second-time offenders; and P1,000 or a 10-day community service for third-time violators. Fourth-time violators will be sued in court, will be fined between P2,000 to P5,000 and stand to be imprisoned for six months. i am bob Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I like it! Not for the health side because I have never heard of anyone having issues with food eaten off of styrene.. But for the fact that there will be much less garbage that doesn't rot away (compost) over time. And plastic bags and styrene both require special recycling equipment that I doubt there is much of in the Philippines.
Mike S Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 The official recommended the use of laminated cartons as food and beverage containers, instead of plastic and polystyrene foams. So is this going to also be applicable to the grocery stores .... department stores and other such shops that use plastic bags ...... sounds to me like he is only going after the food vendors and the small ones at that ....... maybe his lunch in the little plastic bag broke and spilled all over his nice new shirt ..... no problem as the next time his 50p lunch gets served in a laminated carton it will cost him 100p ...... good for him .... he just put 100,000 little mom and pop shops out of business ........ maybe he will introduce new city legislation to feed these out of work ex-shop owners ...... and the world goes round ......
