Popular Post bows00 Posted May 15, 2012 Popular Post Posted May 15, 2012 My friend became a father for the first time this week with his new Filipina wife. And he's 50 years old. Now everybody's first reaction back in the US is ---what! Are you crazy?!! Now he is not a green twenty something year old with tons of energy to raise his new daughter, but age does have it's advantages. He has the wisdom and the years - years of money accumulation in investments and savings, something a young 20 year old may not be in position to provide... He realized he may not be around for his daughters distant future, but through the years, he has personally experienced the power of compounding interest. So right off the bat, he put down $5K in mutual funds for his daughters future college expenses, and he is currently seeking the first opportunity to put another $5K for her RETIREMENT! If he succeeds to set up a ROTH in her name for the next 65 plus years, she will automatically be well taken care of. Now that is one lucky daughter! It gives me hope - being old is not as bad as I thought.

Forum Support Popular Post Old55 Posted May 15, 2012 Forum Support Popular Post Posted May 15, 2012 Great topic. I was 54 when my youngest son was born. Getting married and or having children without a financial plan is selfish, foolish in fact it's inexcusable. Sadly now and then we read an older expat passing away leaving his GF or wife with children and no money. :th_unfair:
Will Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Nice to see some other older first time dads out there, i thought i was alone. Im 45 and we just had our little one turn 5 months old. Mine and the asawas first. Although, to be honest, it sure gets me down sometimes feeling like i waited too long. My dad had two grown men when he was 45. Just trying to keep my mind on the here and now.
i am bob Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I think most of us would agree that it isn't the age we have our children at but how well financially we are prepared for them when they come... When my ex-wife and I separated, I gave her everything (including a thriving business) so that the kids would never suffer. I'm sure most others would want the same for their children too!

Disadvantage too old to run around with them when they are teenagers. Hey Hey hey again..lol I will be able to run around with mine. I have friends that are 60 years old with 6 pack stomachs and and another friend 70 years old who plays Tennis, softball and regular sports and another friend almost 80. Yes they all have young children too. Well the 80 year old daughter is now 18 but he runs circles around me. Age is nothing but a number. if you think you can't then you cant. If you think you can then you can. I come to the Philippines to live not to die. If any of you that have young children and do not think you can run with them then I will be sponsoring and getting Little League Baseball back in Cebu.
