i am bob Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 I wonder if this will mean changing the unofficial second language of the United States to Tagalog?
earthdome Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 I wonder if this will mean changing the unofficial second language of the United States to Tagalog? No, I think the unofficial second language in US should remain Canadian, eh? As I recall from the article, Filipino's were the second highest group of asian immigrants with Chinese being #1.
JJReyes Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 (edited) Tagalog is included in a data compilation by the Department of Education known as, "Other languages spoken at home." Schools with large numbers of foreign born students receive extra funding from the US government. My niece has three Master Degrees in Mathematic, English as a Second Language and Early Childhood Education. Her classroom in California is 100% Hispanic, Pilipino and Vietnamese. The school district is able to give her a generous compensation package using the additional money from the federal government. Several years ago, Tagalog was included by the Office of the Director for National Intelligence as, "Critical for the security of the United States." All kinds of funds became available to American universities who wanted to teach Tagalog. We had a good laugh with colleagues from the University of Hawaii Linguistic Department. Tagalog was probably included in the mistaken belief that is the vernacular language spoken in Mindanao. It was great for UH because they were already teaching Tagalog and several other Philippine languages. Edited June 21, 2012 by JJR
Mike S Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 I disagree with the survey when it says that Asians are over taking Hispanics as the NEW immigrants ..... Mexico is now considered part of the US so they don't count them any more ...... :hystery: :hystery: :hystery: :hystery:

There are more Americans who say "eh" than Canadians do - and so many others try to sound just like Alex Trebec on Jeopardy - so obviously Canadian must be the main language spoken in the US. And with the Filipinos rising so quickly on the list, they will soon surpass China! :mocking:
