Maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near center and gustiness of up to 150 kph. Its western outer rainbands continues to spread across Northern Luzon and the Eastern Coastline of Taiwan. This storm will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (aka. Habagat) across Metro Manila, Southern Tagalog Provinces, Rest of Luzon, Bicol Region, Mindoro, and Visayas today. Breezy to very windy conditions & mostly cloudy conditions w/ occasional to sometimes continuous rains, thunderstorms & squalls will be expected along the abovementioned areas, especially along the western coast. The seas along the coastal areas facing the West, East and North Philippine Seas will be rough and dangerous. On the forecast track, the core of SAOLA will remain over the open sea (North Philippine Sea)...passing well to the ENE of Basco, Batanes tonight, and approaching the coast of Northeastern Taiwan by Wednesday evening. By midday Thursday, SAOLA will be out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as it moves away from the coast of Northern Taiwan Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min. avg) remain near 100 km/hr (55 knots) with higher gusts. More strengthening is forecast during the next 3 days, and SAOLA is expected to become a Typhoon later tonight or Tuesday. Tropical Storm Force Winds (62-117 km/hr) extend outward up to 120 kilometers (65 nautical miles) from the center. SAOLA is a large-sized tropical cyclone with a diameter of 890 kilometers (480 nautical miles). WEDNESDAY NOON: Becomes a Category 2 Typhoon as it moves slowly closer to the tiny island of Ishigaki...about 129 km SSW of Ishigaki City [12PM AUG 01: 23.4N 123.8E @ 165kph]. THURSDAY NOON: Reaches Category 3 as it passes near the coast of Northeastern and Northern Taiwan...about 138 km ENE of Taipei, Taiwan [12PM AUG 02: 25.6N 122.8E @ 185kph]. http://www.typhoon2000.ph/update.html MANILA, Philippines - Tropical storm “Gener” continued to intensify yesterday as it moved toward extreme Northern Luzon, threatening to bring heavy rains and strong winds in the next few days, the weather bureau said. Storm warning signal no. 2 remained hoisted over Cagayan, including the Calayan and Babuyan groups of islands, and Batanes group of islands as of 5 p.m. yesterday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said. Signal number 1 was raised over Isabela, Kalinga and Apayao. As of 4 p.m. yesterday, the center of the storm was spotted at 380 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour near center and gustiness of up to 120 kph. Gener, the seventh tropical cyclone to enter the country this year, is expected to move north- northwest at 11 kph and dump 10 to 25 millimeters per hour of rain (classified as heavy-intense) within its 700-km radius. PAGASA weather forecaster Jun Galang said Gener would continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing rains over central and southern Luzon, the Visayas and northern Mindanao in the next day or two. PAGASA weather division chief Robert Sawi said the southwest monsoon will continue to bring rains over Negros, Panay island, Mindoro, Batangas, Cavite, Bataan, Zambales and Metro Manila until today. Galang warned residents living in low-lying and mountainous areas under storm warning signals against possible landslides and flashfloods. Those living in coastal areas under storm warning signal no. 2 are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by the tropical cyclone. Galang said Gener is likely to exit the Philippine area of responsibility by tomorrow or Wednesday. Gener is predicted to be 190 km northeast of Basco, Batanes this afternoon and 390 km north of Basco or 30 km east of Taiwan tomorrow afternoon. By Wednesday afternoon, it is expected to make landfall over northeastern China or 660 km north-northwest of Basco.
