Jollygoodfellow Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Well, I smoked for 40 years, much of that chain smoking about 3 pks a day. The last 20 years, people started treating smokers like 2 class citizens and making a big deal out of trying to MAKE me quit.... The more they jeered, insulted, got mad, name called and whatever else they could think of to piss me off, the more I would resent them and made smoking my stand.....However when it started causing a little shortness of breath I began to take notice. Then when I needed back surgery, the Doc said " You can quit smoking and this surgery will heal in about 6 weeks, or you can keep smoking and it will heal in about 6 months...it's up to you. Do whatever you want." It was then that I decided to quit.To be honest with you, I could never really smell smoke unless I went into a bar packed with smokers or my car in the morn ing when I first got in. After about 2-3 minutes I couldn't smell it anymore. That is why I could not understand all the yakking people did about the smell of smoke. Both my parents smoked heavy, so I was in the smoke enrironment all my life and never knew any different. After being non-smoker now since 2001, I can smell smoke 100feet away, and on anyone that comes in the room after smoking a cigg. NOT a pleasent smell to say the least. I think there are a number of smokers like I was, that knows better but doesn't want someone jaming it down their throats.JimI believe smokers have the right to smoke if they want to but their rights should not have to encroach on non smokers rights. If I got to a bar for a drink then that is why I'm going there ,not to have someone else's second hand smoke as well. The best thing that ever happened in Australia is that smoking is banned in the bar but another place is set aside for the smoker so everyone is happy.I agree Its no point jamming the non smoking debate down someones throat as its the same as telling the over weight person that the cream bun is no good for them.My father said to me last time I visited him that everyone warned him about smoking for years and he wished he had of listened to them as he set off for his weekly Chemo for lung cancer. So my only point in this subject is that there needs to be a way to accommodate both non smokers and smokers when their together. johnrxx99 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I smoked for 20 years, gave up for 15 and started agian, here, 18 months ago.I'm an addict, I know that. I also know that people who have given up detest being in a smokey atmosphere. Those that havent smoked are more generally relaxed about it.So, we all have a choice. If you don't like it, dont go there. In bars here, people smoke, period. If you don't like porn, don't watch it but respect other people have choices as well. In essence, we should not be sanctimonious, just go with the flow.
Mik Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 What about using a smokeless tobacco product like Swedish snus, similar to American dipping tobacco, but with much lower nitrosamine levels?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snus
