Dried Fish ( Yak )

I got used to the smell of dried fish cooking because it makes my wife happy. I'm sure there are things she did not like about me that she got used to. One of them being that I spend too much time on the computer.

Dave,

There's a huge difference between cooking dried fish and being on a computer. When you get off the computer you're not on it any more but when dried fish is cooked in the house you can smell it for days, even if you hate the smell. I have smelled corpses rotting that didn't smell as bad as cooking some dried fish.

Maybe its not fair to not allow her to eat cooked dried fish so tell her to cook it outside. Only eating it inside will greatly reduce the smell and your urge to vomit.

When I first started to look into the Philippines, I read a few articles that all mentioned that everybody had 2 kitchens in their house - one inside and one outside. I read this so many times that I thought it was the norm. Now I know the truth but, someday, when my darlin' and I settle down, I want the dual kitchen setup! Great for those stinky dishes like dried fish as well as keep the house cooler when it's a very hot day!

Just in case you are new to the dried fish cooking experience, here is an example of what to look for to know when your sweetheart is contemplating 'sharing' this rite of passage with you:

The bag of little dried fish in the video (the ones he picked up and said were like eating potato chips) were the ones I said I couldn't stand the thought of eating because of all the eyes. I'm pretty sure I can get just as much variety in the dried fish here in Canada too! Scary thought.... :mocking:

I have more bad news, Bob. Google images of 'jalousie windows' to see what the norm is here and remember that most of the time they are left open. It means whatever you can smell outside (from dried fish to the neighbors burning plastic) will be even more pungent inside.

Its more stinky fun in Philippines

I miss the old Jalousie windows - my grandparents had them on their cottage on Lake Erie.

I used to live in a fishing village outside Halifax and only 2 doors down from where the fisherman would dry part of their catch... I have to admit that it rarely bothered me except when it was stinking hot out - pun intended! The old fishing village itself has changed now and has become a tourist attraction for visitors to Halifax rather than having to go out to Peggy's Cove - which means my old house I rented is now an ice cream shop. The smell of burning plastic I can do without!

:mocking:
