"mauling" Of Foreign Student

This story is getting front page coverage here:

CEBU CITY -- "Philippine Ambassador to Papua New Guinea Bienvenido Tejano asked for an investigation report of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), so he can show that the mauling of a foreign student in Cebu City will not be tolerated.“Now we are all in danger of retaliation here,” he said, referring to thousands of Filipinos who work in that country. “We have to explain to the PNG authorities that this is an isolated case.” Bennidict Penini, 29, made bail on Tuesday, two days after two Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) policemen beat him up and arrested him in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City, where he allegedly ran amuck."

I wonder what would have been the reaction if one if the rocks he was hurling had struck and seriously injured a child or any other innocent bystander. Would there be a cry about "excessive" police force? Maybe he shouldn't throw rocks.

I saw the film of this on our local news, this guy deserved to have his ass kicked, they just went a little to far using a rifle butt , in Oklahoma if you fight with an officer of the law he can use deadly force if needed, the officers in Cebu lost their job and i am sure the student will be deported, he also will be charged for assualt on a bystander.

They didn't lose their jobs they were "temporarily relieved" pending investigation. I don't know about being deported, "Lastimoso (his lawyer) said that Penini will talk to his parents about the possibility of having the case settled outside the court". I did not see the tape but he looks none the worse for wear. He should know better then to throw rocks at police, he's 29. Maybe now he does. They really like to use the word "maul" in these cases, in the west it is usually associated with an attack by an animal.

I read the same news report yesterday. Within 2 minutes I saw another report where a female police instructor mauled a police recruit and was suspended. Must be just the police that maul people?

Bob, I never thought about it until you said it.... I think you are correct. Over the years reading the local news the word "maul" used most often in cases involving police or groups of people beating a criminal.
