Emergency Cover?

Hey All.

Soooo... this thread was somewhat(entirely) inspired by my overly concerned father.

I'm looking for an insurance company that has cover for emergencies only, i'm pretty much covered in Australia so i'm just looking for a first class air ticket home if i get mangled in a jeepney accident (probably by stepping in front of one). Any such cover? Any recommendations?

Thanks.

I'm not sure of what your Australian insurance would cover but here in Canada, I am covered on my regular insurance for a couple months of travel. For your time frame as a student, I would be looking into a Traveller's Insurance (something like what Southern Cross would offer) or, if you decide to stay longer than the Australian policy would cover, there are a couple plans here - most likely Blue Cross (or similar) if you don't plan on making the Philippines your permanent home, If you do decide to stay, there are some (like Kaiser) who you pay for over a couple years and then are covered for life.

You will find quite a bit of discussion on who is who and what is covered, etc under the Health and Hospitals section. Or you can start with a recent series of posts on this which you can read here: http://www.philippines-expats.com/index.php/topic/13770-best-health-insurance/ And, as always, if you see something you like, do a little research for your own specific needs to make sure you will be covered the way you want to be!

.. lot of discussion in Bob's link .. my research has impressed upon me a few things I try to remember .. most (maybe none) of the Travelers insurance provide immediate payment .. they will reimburse after they get documentation from the Philippines, which might take some time ... so it seems you will need to make provisions to cover immediate expenses (hospital payments .. ticket home, etc) .. if there is an accident.

... if you have an accident involving alcohol consumption, your insurance might not cover (read the fine print)

... if you have stayed in the Phils for longer than 6 mos. you will need an Emigration Clearance Certificate (ECC) from Phils Immigration (BI). This will require a visit to the Immigration office .. so if you are injured and want to exit immediately, this might be a problem.

.. Life's Seems to be More Fun in the Phils (but not necessarily simpler) :cheersty:

Whats this ECC business.

Just a letter you must get from Immigration if you stay 6 consecutive months or more as a tourist. You only need it when you leave the country and it is only valid for 30 days after you get it so don't worry about it until a month before you are ready to leave then you can find lots of info by searching the forums or just ask again closer to the time (because everything changes on a whim in Philippines so info current today will not likely be valid in 6 months).
