JJReyes Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I lived in India '92-'94, sometimes one had to run fast to get inside the hotel when being approched by beggers with severe leprosy. Leprosy or Hansen's disease was a big problem at one time in Hawaii. A section of Molokai Island was set aside for the mandatory relocation of those afflicted with the disease. The area was totally isolated and at the time only approachable by sea. Now it's a tourist attraction because of the legacy of Father Damien, a Belgian priest who came to their aid and eventually contracted the disease himself. S123 Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) A section of Molokai Island was set aside for the mandatory relocation of those afflicted with the disease. This made me to wonder if I havn't read that this is true for the Philippines as well. Isn't there such a place in Palawan? sonjack2847 Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 If people are harassing me I say Hindi Salamat if that does not work try Dilli pwoyte (spelling) that always works. @ Matt sometimes trying to be polite just does not work, not just in the phills but anywhere where people are harassing you. I have a few special phrases but you asked for the polite ones so I won`t put them here.
MikeB Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Just want to know what the phrase for something like... "With respect, i'm not interested." Need to master that one. Just want a very polite local way of telling someone i really dont need that taxi/perfume/stungun/massssage.... Does your question pertain to the viagra/sunglass/puppy selling crowd or someone who is genuinely trying to help you and you don't need it? There's a huge difference. If it's the former why would you want to be polite, are they being polite when they accost you when you are trying to walk down the street? If it's the latter stick to the English "No thanks", with all the dialects it's safer and you're not going to fool anyone anyway.
Beachboy Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 My Tagalog is terrible but I think "Mayroon akong walang upang bigyan ka ng" means "I have nothing to give you." Filipino speakers (hello Julia -- haha) .. help! As in any place, you can show respect by tone of voice and body language .. words not necessary. Isn't there such a place in Palawan? -- off topic but the place you are thinking of is Fort Culion in Palawan -- possible the largest Hansen's Disease colony in the world at one time .. now a single vaccine shot can prevent the transmission but in the Phils not everyone gets the vaccine so it's still possible to acquire the disease .. once it is diagnosed drug treatment can halt it's progress and prevent further nerve damage .. problem is diagnosing it ..

Julia Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I should i have mentioned though i mean't for a specifically tagalog expression. I just wanted to know how to say it in tagalog. :P A simple "ayoko po. salamat na lang" in Tagalog is enough. Don't forget to smile when you say so and then look away to convince them that you are in no way interested with what they are selling.
