ibemarshall Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 I am thinking about different types of transportation I might consider once I am in county fulltime. Lots of options and one I am interested in at the moment is an E-Trike. Having been recently introduced on a limited scale to the Philippines, I am interested to know if anyone has had the opportunity to try it out yet and if so, how did it go. Obviously there are infrastructure issues, chance of theft, etc but I am intrigued. Anyone else? So, to kind of introduce things I offer the following short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iov_pNSySLM

tiger31 Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 the sooner these things are rolled out across the whole of the philippines the better coz the pollution from those trycles is horrendous
Jollygoodfellow Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Have to laugh at the beginning of the video it shows a woman waiting to cross at the pedestrian crossing but no one stops. I wish they would enforce the law if there is one about these crossings, if not scrape the paint off the road. Sorry I guess I hijacked this topic. :SugarwareZ-037:
MikeB Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 According to this they are going to put 20,000 in key tourist areas like Boracay and Palawan, then study the efficacy of putting 80,000 more around the country. The entire beach at Boracay is about a mile long. Sounds like these things are destined to enhance the image of the tourist areas, not for the common folk and that's too bad; imagine what a profound effect these things could have in the congested, polluted mess of places like Carcar.
Thomas Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Interesting...any idea of the cost? E g this one is a small wholesaler http://sulit.com.ph/4877729 but he has minimum packages of 4, but I believe it's include normal ebikes normaly. I have seen better than that one, but I didn't made notes of tricycles, because I'm just interested in normal ones. I BELIEVE I have seen one electric tricycle for 70 000p (don't remenber if it's wholesale or retail price.) Look up with many ebikes has weak motors, the smaller ones have problem even with be driven by ONE kano :) The speeds and distances they often count at 75 kg for driver plus load together. Very cheap "fuel" (just 12 pesos for 45 km for a normal ebike) BUT it's a problem with the low distance (around 45 km) on one load. Then they need load time 4-6 hours, which is a problem when being commersial. I don't know if it's easy to switch to an other battery pack to solve that problem, but probably not to easy, because then they can be stolen to easy... :)
OldUgly&Cranky Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) i just wonder something it maybe a good idea that would clear up a small portion of the pollution problem that is for sure , but with the cost of electricity today in the philippines it might not be any cheaper to run maybe even more expensive then a regular trike , can you imagine a simple trike driver having a bill every month for like 8000 pesos just to pay the cost of electricity for that trike !! and what do the philippines use to generate electricity COAL ? well they put 80 000 of these things on the road guess what more coal = more pollution not really solving the problem in the first place , and what about all the brown outs or the sometimes days of no power i wonder if these these green heads have thought of that hows a trike driver supposed to make $ when theres been no power for 3 days because of a typhoon or as we all have experienced just a brown out for 3 days and he cant use his electric trike , personally this is just a novelty that the government can say see were trying to go green i can bet you for a fact this will never fly !!!! i seen that adb had something to do with this hahaha they can really talk i seen some of there top guys with police escorts driving in a HUGE bullet proof SUV and that trike driver saying it only cost him a $1 a day to charge it yeah maybe because he's prob getting a subsidy for being a part of this project wait till they say no more subsidy , and it uses lithium batteries ok what about the impact on the environment to mine for that i wonder if the green heads have thought of that ??? O-U-C  Edited October 14, 2012 by OldUgly&Cranky

O-U-C  Valid points but I sure hope it works because hopefully it would be an overall positive impact on the air pollution, AND, a huge improvement in NOISE pollution!
tiger31 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 yes pollution and noise are the key words lets face it the trycles make such a racket your never far away from it .I get woken up every dam morning by trike drivers starting their shift it drives me nuts .having only e trikes will be heaven on earth lol
Dave Hounddriver Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 The concept is viable. I visited Catalina Island, California in 2000 and golf carts were the only motorized transportation allowed on the island. No reason why the same could not be done on some islands here. Or call them e trikes if you like
