New Zealander back in Philippines jail

A New Zealander accused of raping two girls in the Philippines and then briefly freed from custody has been intercepted at an airport and put back in jail.

Bureau of Immigration spokesman Commissioner Ricardo David Jr said that David William Wakefield, 50, was stopped at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Wednesday (NZ time) as he was about to board a Philippine Airlines flight to Singapore.

An immigration lookout bulletin had been issued for him on the order of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, the Philippines' Sun Star newspaper reported.

He was held in the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation and Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking but Davao City police director Superintendent Renante Cabico said he had been re-arrested and put back in jail on Thursday.

Wakefield, who also holds a British passport, is accused of raping the girls, aged 10 and 12, from Kidapawan City at a hotel in Davao City last month.

He was charged with child abuse and human trafficking but was freed temporarily over "technicalities" related to his arrest. Kidapawan City Mayor Rodolfo Gantuangco admitted he facilitated a meeting between Wakefield's lawyer and the alleged victims to try to arrange an "amicable settlement" of the case.
