What should I expect if I download windows 8 into our newish laptop?

Will it crash and stop the internet? Will I still get too many cute cat pictures on facebook? Will it block porn sites? Will my car get better gas milage and my hair grow back?

I think I'll just go out and buy an Apple.

Old55 ..... before you decide to do anything with Win 8 check on Google ..... I have heard nothing but bad things about it so far ..... including if you download it on top of our present system you can't go back to your former version should you not like it ...... most people are saying they have found little or no advantage to Win 8 over Win 7 ...... I know you will find lots of raves about Win 8 but just remember a whole lot of people work for M$ and a bunch write nothing but praises about Win 8 to keep their paychecks coming ...... check some of the other forums that deal with software and see what they think ..... you will be amazed .... IMHO ..... :cheersty:

Instead of upgrading your current OS, install it on separate Hard Disk or partition.

I installed an evaluation version in a Virtual Machine. (VMWARE player).

It takes a while to get used to the Metro desktop. It's like using a giant windows phone.

For now I stick to Windows 7 until support ends. I have no real need for Windows 8 yet.

On my netbook I have Ubuntu 12.04 and on my laptop I am running Mint 13 - both with LXDE desktops! They are now both amazingly fast - faster than any Windows OS I have used (and I did some beta testing on Windows 8 - ugh!) and have the added feature for newbies coming from Windows that they resemble XP somewhat in appearance.

So why am I happier with this setup (besides the fact that it's not Windows?)... It boots in less than one minute (usually in less than 25 seconds) to a ready to use state. Speeds on my desktop are so fast that sometimes I don't even notice that the change I selected has happened - it's really instantaneous! Even online, my spee :mocking: ds have increased by at least twice my previous when changing pages, doing searches, etc while using Chromium (pre-Google branded Chrome). And it does pretty well everything that Windows 8 promises but fails to achieve - except the touch screen. I know that is coming but I haven't looked to see what the release date will be. Same for the phone.

If anybody is looking for Windows 8 because you can have it on your desktop / laptop / netbook / pad and also on your phone, well, you can. They just are not the same OS. And they are not compatible is soooo many ways! So if you think you can do something on your base and then transfer it to your phone? Sorry guys! You is plain out of luck!

Unfortunately, I have to keep Windows on a partition for my occasional online poker sessions. Other than that I could do without it.

I know how you feel... I am going to do the same so I can bring Freephoneline to the Philippines when I move. It will work on Mac or Windows but not Linux yet - and it really doesn't like to be run in a Virtual Windows.
