Dr. Cockroach Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I myself, wouldn't bother with Windows 8. I tested it couple of months ago and really didn't like it so I reversed back to my Windows 7. My main frustration was I didn't understand why should I learn new things to do what I am doing now? Add to this the plethora of accessories, software and hoops I'd have to jump to get others things to work with it so they could do the same thing? Besides, when you retire, all you need is a browser :th_thbarbaque:
Mike S Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I don't understand the need for a nano-second start up speed ..... besides it wouldn't do me any good anyway as I have 30-35 programs all opening at start up and they are all up and running in less than 2 minutes ..... I could even speed it up more by putting some of the programs in delay start .... but what the hell ... I'm retired and I got da time .... so I can do the crime ...... :hystery: :hystery: :hystery: ..... any way OS's are like politics ..... everyone has a favorite and ya ain't gonna chance anyone else s opinion as they all have their good and bad points ..... IMHO ...... :nudie: :hystery: :hystery: :cheersty:
i am bob Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 Among the many reasons for a faster boot - less power used and less wear and tear on your hardware. The booting process is where almost 90% of the wear and tear comes from. Hard drives spin better once they are warmed up and don't grind on their axis. Processors are made to be more accurate at certain temperatures. And power supplies aren't ridden hard and put away wet when they don't have to produce full power for longer periods of time. :tiphat:

They are downright nasty! Anyway, I believe these so called new and improved MicroSoft OS's are all part of their marketing strategy. In the case of Window 8, it's suppose to enhance the growing tablet market and touchscreen features. I would rather wait until they work out the bugs and the price to come down. Honestly, I have no need to change. I'm quite satisfied with Windows 7, my saving grace from the slow and bloated Windows Vista. Bob mentioned about wear and tear on computer hardware. The hard drive is actually the slowest because it's all mechanical. You may have one that spins at 9K rpm but it's still very slow as compared to data flow on the mother board. I was thinking about upgrading to SSD (solid state devices): http://www.amazon.co...lid state drive. Any pros and cons.......? Mike S Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 The HD on my Acer Tab is SSD ...... but I've only had it for a year .... it is fairly quick but like you said nothing mechanical ..... so no need for a cresent-hammer ..... :hystery: :hystery: :hystery:

Pros: Very fast, No need to wait for spin-up Cons: It also "wears out" (number of write cycles) just like your mechanical hard-drive. Sorry Bob but I don't buy your old (IBM?) theories about today's computers. The times when computer rooms were kept at a constant temperature and humidity in order to keep those big clunky machines running (most was mechanical), are long over. Nothing last forever. In the end all mechanical devices wear-out and silicon devices burn-up. Here in the PH high temperature and high humidity does most of the damage to home computers.
Beachboy Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Since 30% of all web traffic is porn, and since the average time spent on porn sites has increased 26% since 2008, this proves conclusively that Win7 has been a distinct winner. The real question is whether Win8 will increase the time spent on porn. And time will tell if Microsoft has scored a hit or a flop. :cheersty:
