Windows 8?

Since 30% of all web traffic is porn, and since the average time spent on porn sites has increased 26% since 2008, this proves conclusively that Win7 has been a distinct winner. The real question is whether Win8 will increase the time spent on porn. And time will tell if Microsoft has scored a hit or a flop. :cheersty:

WTF ..... is going on here ..... this doesn't make any sense ....

I think someone is trying to humouresly infer that the increase in net and porn traffic is due to the release of windows 7 and not just the normal traffic increase.....the only problem is that windows 7 was not released till latet 79 if my memory is correct.

Bob mentioned about wear and tear on computer hardware. the hard drive is actually the slowest because it's all mechanical. You may have one that spins at 9K rpm but it's still very slow as compared to data flow on the mother board. I was thinking about upgrading to SSD (solid state devices): http://www.amazon.co...lid state drive. Any pros and cons.......?

Pros: Very fast, No need to wait for spin-up

Cons: It also "wears out" (number of write cycles) just like your mechanical hard-drive.

Sorry Bob but I don't buy your old (IBM?) theories about today's computers. The times when computer rooms were kept at a constant temperature and humidity in order to keep those big clunky machines running (most was mechanical), are long over.

Nothing last forever. In the end all mechanical devices wear-out and silicon devices burn-up.

Here in the PH high temperature and high humidity does most of the damage to home computers.

Aren't you kind of contradicting yourself?

Well, like everything else.....nothing last forever -- relationships, brand new car, dildos....etc, etc.

What did Spock say a long time ago? It is illogical to assume that everything will remain stable.

The high temps and humidity are killers of electronics. In countries where the power grid is unstable,

dust everywhere and other pollutants, even the small box AC adapter that converts AC from the wall

to DC voltages, will get a workout.

Just like Mike S, I am old school and have done extensive homework before I purchase a big ticket

item. Like many other military veterans on this forum, we all know about preventive maintenance.

The military maintenance philosophy is if it's not broke, break it again. For example, how many times

Mike S that you were told to field strip your M-14 and M-60 when you are already zeroed in? In my

case, I had to perform a one hour disassembly to get to a damn air filter to clean/replace (5 minute

job) and then reassemble the equipment again.

But you know what? Preventive maintenance works in the long run. A simple vacuum job on a desk

top (twice a year) should extend the life of your computer.

Worn out -- Jake

The whole thing is about change. Change in the way things are done and many cry they are too old to learn something new but they managed to move on from the old black and white TV to the latest smart TV or drive a modern car even if the model changed every year. I was reading a complaint the other day from someone who frequents forums about keeping it simple but the same person adapted from one software to another or managed to use a washing machine even after the one tub and twin rollers for wringing went out of fashion.

Personally I am in no hurry to change as my laptop is windows 7 and my main desktop is still xp as I can not afford a new computer but the whole; my god I don't know what to do as I am too scared to learn something new shits me as its all about playing with it till one understands how it works. The windows 8 is driven towards the touch screen and cell/mobile devices but get used to it as the future is here now and was yesterday and will be tomorrow.

That concludes my late night rant. :)

The biggest complaints so far with Windows 8 is that (a) if you have a normal desk top / lap top and another computer with a touch screen (such as a tablet), the OS used between the 2 is different and will not talk to each other for compatibility reasons; (b) the so-called intuitive set up is more confusing than any other operating system in existence; © too many bugs still and (d) none of your old apps will work on Windows 8 or, if they will work, they just won't work as well as your old OS. Did I mention that your Windows 8 phone can communicate with your tablet (for, say, calendar updates) but will not work with your desktop?

I did some testing a while back on Windows 8 for a report I was writing and I really really really did not like it at all. And I did try to take out of the equation the fact that I am not a Windows person at all! Give me Mint 14 with the LXDE desktop or give me.... oh, ok...!

I nominate JGF for President ..... he wrote to paragraph's of something I don't understand but he made me like it ...... he has the makings of a true politician ........ :hystery: :hystery:

Just kidding ..... you ARE right many people are afraid of change or at least uncomfortable with it ..... an excellent example of that is people that move here from where ever and want to change living here to just the way it was back home ..... back home won't work here .... so you gotta except the change ....

Having said that I don't ever intend on buying Win 8 ...... I like and am comfortable with Win 7 ............ :mocking: .... :cheersty:
