Hyundai, Kia 'overstated fuel efficiency'

The US Environmental Protection Agency says Hyundai and Kia overstated the fuel mileage on most of their models from the past three years.

The agency found the problems during an audit. It's making the companies retrofit window stickers to show lower mileage numbers.

Both companies say they're sorry for the errors and they'll reimburse customers for the difference between the mileage figures. They blame procedural mistakes and say they didn't intend to inflate the numbers.

The EPA says the companies will have to cut the gas mileage estimates by one to two miles per gallon on most models. One model's highway fuel economy was inflated by six miles per gallon.

The agency says the investigation is continuing. It wouldn't comment on whether the companies will be fined.

Those guys are strict. In Philippines they could get away with saying "Up to" that amount of miles per gallon and explain it away that you only get good fuel economy going downhill with the motor off.

There are more car companies than them telling to low. Just a few weeks ago Swedish TV news named several, I don't remember which*, but there were cars from "kano countries" too.

(*I didn't bother to memorise/make notes of which, because I try to move to the Philippines soon and buy a "Toyota Other" there. Or perhaps I will buy just an (electric) motorbike and rent a car (with driver) when I need one, because I will need to move just a few kilometers mostly, but will need a car to move biger things as e g furniture and such sometimes. Not sure if it's to hard to get such car capacity temporary in my future province, perhaps I will be "forced" to buy a car.)
