Forum Support Old55 Posted November 5, 2012 Forum Support Posted November 5, 2012 It seems every other visit I get a head cold with severe sore throat. Hot fresh squeezed Calamansi and honey helps but is effect is only temporary. Anyone know any effective remedies?

Dave Hounddriver Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 It is very common among people who have been away from this region for 6 months or more and then come back. Must be some cold germs that you get immune to after a while. I used to get sick when I came. Most other first timers I know did too. But now I seldom get colds or flu here (seldom but not never) so my suggestion is just to give it time. Take appropriate care to guard against dehydration (doctor can tell you more but its important).

I hope that this time I will get over it and as you said, be somewhat immune. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since it started and I just have a little bit of lingering cough. I also used strepcil and some other local meds that seemed to help.
Dave Hounddriver Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I also used strepcil and some other local meds that seemed to help. Thats a good tip. Anyone coming here should bring some of their favorite cough medicine. For me, I like Fisherman's Friend sore throat lozenges but I have to go at least to Hong Kong to find them. kaku Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 (edited) The best remedy for sore throat is to gargle with warm salt water. At the first sign of a sore throat, add three tablespoons of ordinary table salt to warm water. This remedy is by far the best available. No bacteria or virus is resistant to this treatment. My entire family has been using it for years and it works wonders. Getting ride of a cold is more difficult but a neti pot with a saline solution helps. Neti pots are used to irrigate your sinuses. Note: Gargle at least 3 or 4 times. Edited November 5, 2012 by kaku
