Husband Of Us Diplomat Killed In Makati City

It's a bit confusing sometimes about US military status. I suspect he was a reserve US Marine officer and was activated for a period of time.

I have read a number of conflicting stories, some saying Mr Anikow was Inactive, some say Active, waiting orders. It appears he was not in the Philippines in any official capacity but as the spouse of an employee of the US Embassy and they are including all employees and dependents as part of the "US mission to the Philippines". That's my take. On the CCTV video it clearly shows the security guard trying to push Mr Anikow away from the situation with the Volvo, although there's no audio it appears likely he is telling him to stay out of it and let him handle it. Too bad he didn't listen. It was after 3am and, according to the guard, Mr Anikow was visibly drunk. It's a sad situation that never should have happened but, tragically, does.

Normally when referring to someone at an embassy as being a "member of the Mission", you are referring to someone who works at the embassy - the "Team". His wife would be a member of the Mission. For him to be a member of the Mission, he would also be required to work at the embassy. Sometimes you will hear of people (like Peace Corp members) who will be active in a country under an embassy but they are not considered members of the Mission as they are not doing the work of the embassy itself. Quite often and when appropriate, husband and wife can be both members of the Mission. And, if the government decided that they wanted him at the embassy for some reason other than a military role (such as CIA, scientist / doctorial specialist or even a damn good janitor), he would have been seconded to the appropriate government agency and placed on the inactive list for the Marines during his tenure there. This avoids political embarrassment (of him being an "Active" Marine) should something go wrong along the tour. Now, I'm not saying this was the case with this man but rather just that this is how it is sounding from the news reports I have read. I think it more likely he just took a prior leave of absence or was a reserve who then came to the Philippines with his wife as the working Mission person.

found another news article of why this happend. its called "MALE PRIDE"

i will not comment on it..

But post the article to show a different point of view of why? and why come crimes occur here in the RP by "men"

also it appears the victim had been "harrassing" the gate guard before the incident

i was unaware of that fact or he was "drunk"

MANILA, Philippines - Male pride was the motive behind the killing of a US Marine and spouse of a diplomat outside an upscale subdivision in Makati on Saturday, police said on Monday, November 26.

"The suspects, being male.their pride was stepped on by another man. That's the very simple reason for the incident," Makati police chief Senior Supt Manuel Lukban explained during an interview with Rappler.

Lukban said that the men were "irked" when US Marine Maj George Anikow tapped on their vehicle and triggered a fistfight that ended with the victim stabbed to death and lying on the road in a pool of his own blood.

Four young men were arrested and charged with murder while the investigation determines which one of them stabbed Anikow after the brawl at the gate leading to the posh Rockwell subdivision in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Victim harassed security guard

The incident occurred around 4am, when a visibly drunk Anikow first approached the security guard manning an area that leads to Rockwell and started harassing him about the policy of checking vehicles and not allowing non-residents and guests to pass through between 2am and 5am.

CCTV footage from the Rockwell security service showed the American was still interfering with the inspections when a silver Volvo SUV stopped at the gate.

Inside were the driver and 3 young men men who initially ignored 41-year-old Anikow until he tapped on the vehicle to get their attention.

The men then stepped out of the Volvo and confronted the burly US Marine, who according to the guard's statement, pushed one of the men before the others defended their friend.

Seconds later, one of the assailants stabbed Anikow, who received a fatal wound in the neck and limped away before he collapsed in front of a bar along Kalayaan Avenue.

The suspects then sped off along Rockwell Drive toward Palm Village, where one of the suspects owns a unit, but they were arrested before reaching the residence.

Anikow was picked up minutes later by an ambulance and passed away around 7am at the Makati Medical Center.

Assailants preparing for trial

Two days after the incident, the suspects are in jail and waiting for the first hearing on their case upon instructions from their lawyers.

"Initially they did not deny that they were the 4 who were involved in the said incident. But after that, they did not give any more statements," said the Makati police chief.

Lukban identified the suspects as businessmen Juan Alfonso Abastillas, 24 and the driver of the Volvo; Crispin dela Paz, 28; Osric Cabrera, 27; and Galicano Datu III, 22.

The media reported them to come from affluent families.

"They cannot be considered as very prominent and very rich young professionals, but you can see from them that they can have a life that is fair," Lukban said.

Clear case

Lukban said he believes the suspects are guilty of the crime and that now it is up to the court to determine which of them actually stabbed Anikow with a bloodstained military-style knife that was retrieved from the passenger seat of the Volvo.

"As regards to the commission of the crime, it's very clear. What is not clear is who used the weapon to commit the crime," he explained.

Anikow is a US Marine major who served in Afghanistan and was living in Manila with his US diplomat wife while waiting for his next deployment.*

US Embassy Spokesperson Tina Malone said in a brief statement that the victim "was the beloved spouse of a US embassy staff member and a father of three."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is planning to conduct a separate investigation of the case.

Meanwhile, Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said the killing appeared to be an "isolated incident" and not targeted at anyone in particular.

The killing is the first of a foreign diplomat's family member in the Philippines since the famous Hultman-Chapman case, when Claudio Teehankee Jr.,

son of the late chief justice Claudio Teehankee, was convicted of murdering two people, one of them the son of a US Embassy employee, inside Dasmariñas subdivision also in Makati.

Teehankee Jr. served 17 years in jail and was granted a presidential pardon in 2008.

Isn't there a statue regarding multiple guilty parties in the commission of a capital crime shall

be all found guilty of murder. Perhaps the final sentence of each men would be different?

The article provided by Pittman is an interesting perspective of a typical Filipino male psyche.

Just look at some of the movies depicting criminals vs the good guy. The good guy will come

blazing in with an M-16 Armalite without reloading after a few hundred rounds. Most Tagalog

movies are OA, over-acting by B actors. The pride of not losing face in public supersedes

all common human decency. A case in point -- Filipinos killing each other because they didn't

like the way other's were singing MY WAY. That song has now been unofficially outlawed.

Maintain a low profile guys -- Jake

Well that stuffs it then ..... with the info from the last article it is clear that is was all the foreigners fault .... everything .... he hurt their Pinoy Pride .... you know ..... what all the TV commercials play all the time .... and as he was drunk and already verbally fighting with the guard and had the audacity to even think of tapping on the poor little fellers window ..... they had all the right in the world to stab him and kill him ..... after all this is their country as the Philippines is only for Filipinos ..... and now they have no idea who stabbed him where as the video clearly showed who had the knife in their hand .... but perhaps the video is now missing ...... and the security guard saw nothing and the taxi driver can't be found ....... yup ..... I see a filing of lack of evidence and the little fellers set free ..... see I told you I have lived here for a while ..... :hystery: :hystery: :hystery:

What we need is for the FBI to file for extradition and try them all for Capitol Murder. Offer a deal. Whoever flips on the actual murder will get Man 1. The murderer gets Murder 1 and the other accomplaces get Murder 2. No muss, no fuss. Done. If no one rolls over, try them all for Murder 1 and seek the death penalty. Guaranteed 1 will roll on the guilty one. Show the RP that we don't play games.

Why would they be extradited? The crime was committed on Philippine soil - not the USA...

I am starting to wonder just what did really happen though... Anyone want to be we won't see the video tapes they have that say the Major is the one who started it all? Afterall, didn't the first reports say the Volvo was stopped at the gate when the American showed up?
