Thomas Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 Feelings not logic decides what almost all Filipin people do - even when it's obviously stupid for a "western" brain... Today I had a long talk with one of my "informants". She is a retired Filina, who had worked as consultant in companies and developing projects. She isn't normal :) E g she said it's often almost impossible to solve things kano style, even when there are good solutions allready in "kano countries", and the Philippines are far behind. And she brought up too the common stupidity many Filipins business owners don't understand there have to be enough customers even with a good idea =If a business get good result, then it's common many copy it even if it's shops in same road, ending up with all get to few customers... :/
Mike S Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Yup ...... there are 5 sari sari stores in 2 blocks where we live and 7 carenderias and each one probably just makes enough to get by but not a good living (their standards .... not western ... :mocking: ) ..... I am amazed at how this works ..... the 7 carenderias each have a different ulam .... so different customers ..... but things can get pretty rough sometimes with owners wiping out their competitors ... permanently ..... :cheersty:

Thomas Posted December 3, 2012 Author Posted December 3, 2012 Welcome to the world of the "Crab Mentality". Yes, but isn't that an other thing? Because copying to close destroys for THEMSELF too, although they don't understand it, because not understanding "Supply and demand".

Dougbert Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 Not just in the Philippines, either! In Seoul there are self-segregated streets like that. There will be a solid block or two of nothing but shoe shops. Then electronics shops... I think there are similar kinds of things in southern Europe (Greece, Italy). If you are the shopper it makes a lot of sense--you want shoes? You know where to go! And there is plenty of competition...haha.
JJReyes Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 In the United States, a gasoline company opens a new station at a busy interesection. Before you think twice about it, there are four gasoline stations, one in each corner. Why? It's a perception of choice even if the gasoline in all four stations with different brand names come from the same refinery. The truth is all four corner stations jointly benefit from the presence of their competitiors. It's the same with fast food joints, eateries, shoe shops, etc. The more, the merrier and the more income for the owners. Put up a fruit stand on a roadside and few people stop. If there are 20 of you, the motorists will pull over and the passengs will go shop to shop even if the fruits are nearly identifical in size and price (probably they come from the same distributors). Thomas Posted December 4, 2012 Author Posted December 4, 2012 Not just Filipino`s.......A lot of gogo bars on the same strip...Foreigner owned Yes, but it's a big difference between /20 bars becoming famous, making customers to GO THERE /and 20 sarisaris in a suburb backtreet in some small city in the middle of nowhere, all selling same icecream or something :)
