Typhoon in Philippines leaves nearly 300 dead, hundreds missing

http://www.latimes.c...0,5602773.story

Oh! That bursting damm explains why that province got much more dead than other places.

(That's a reason I check if there are any damm or big "rain water collector" uppstreams, when I look where I can be interested in building a house.)

News reports from around the world this morning (it's now 11 am EST) have the number dead anywhere from 145 to 700. I wish people who report such news would get their act together! It just causes even more stress for those with family there but are living elsewhere!

I am amazed that they can have any accurate numbers at all. Its not like these people report for work on Monday morning or have a roll call somewhere. People can wander off for days and not be reported missing so it has to be all but impossible to figure out how many rural people have died from the storm unless they have actual bodies to count.

here is the latest story from BBC NEWS

just sinpets of the story

It is nearly a week since Typhoon Bopha hit the southern Philippines, but there are still many bodies to recover from the devastated province of Compostela Valley.

Typhoon Bopha

  • Destroyed 90% of three coastal towns in Davao Oriental province
  • New Bataan in Compostela Valley all but wiped out
  • At least 620 people dead, more than 800 missing, almost 400,000 displaced

Last year, when Tropical Storm Washi hit the southern Philippines, people had no warning at all and about 1,300 people died - many in the town of Cagayan de Oro.

Cagayan de Oro was in the path of Typhoon Bopha as well, but the memory of Washi is still fresh. This time, people near the rivers all moved to higher ground and not a single life was lost.
