Okieboy Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 MINEOLA, N.Y. – Federal prosecutors say they have arrested a New York man accused of owing more than $1 million in child support. The U.S. Attorney's office in Central Islip says 50-year-old Robert Sand was arrested Tuesday when he landed in Los Angeles after being deported from the Philippines. Prosecutors believe Sand had been living in Thailand. He was taken into custody last month in the Philippines. Details were not immediately available. Sand was listed as the federal government's "most wanted deadbeat parent." He allegedly failed to pay child support for more than a decade for three children from two marriages. Sand is expected to be returned to Long Island federal court for an arraignment Jan. 16. Defense attorney Glenn Obedin says his client "looks forward to the opportunity to address these issues."

Dave Hounddriver Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 1 Million over a decade, Thats 2000$ a week ?...Does it cost that much to keep 3 kids ?. I think you are suggesting that the real crime here is that an ex husband should be forced to pay that much child support. But then, he was living in the Philippines so he must be a rich foreigner.
Jake Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 1 Million over a decade, Thats 2000$ a week ?...Does it cost that much to keep 3 kids ?. Yeah, you're math is right Brock. That amount of 2K a week is probably based on his current income and the current lifestyle of his kids (lavish) when they were abandoned. It would be interesting to find out whether his deportation was initiated by US or he did something bad in the Philippines.

I'd bet you are correct Dave. In most states child support is set on a percentage of your income. For instance in Tennessee it is 21% of your income, which is what I paid after my divorce. So if that's the fact in this case he would have to be decently wealthy or at least had a well paying job at the time his child support was set.
nor cal mike Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 I'm just glad to see the DEADBEAT arrested. As I have said in a previous post I have only utter disgust for parents who refuse to care for their children. Not only should he lose his privilege to drive and travel, he should be medically rendered incapable of producing other children which he won't take care of. Please forgive the rant guys.

I appreciate your right to rant. I just don't agree so I will rant the other way. Child support has become a tool for spoiled bitches in the west to take their ex to the cleaner under the guise of calling it child support and rarely do the children see a dime of that money. Yes I know that is oversimplifying but . . its a rant :71161:

nor cal mike Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Dave, I'm sure this abuse takes place more often than we know. However, if the child is not being cared for as a result of a mother's {spoiled bitch} misuse of the funds given for the child's care, then she falls into the same utter disgust category as the deadbeat Dad. Since most states now use an income based table to determine the amount of child support to be paid, I think the abuse is difficult to perpetrate. I personally know of 3 cases where the Fathers have simply taken off and started new relationships and offer no support whatsoever. It's real easy for an unsupportive Father to whine about what the mother does with the money, but it's still the children who suffer. If a Father thinks his support contributions are being misused, it is real easy to appear before a family court judge and have the matter heard and have the situation corrected. For that matter he can even seek custody and have a judge order the wife to pay child support. Running off the Thailand or the Philippines is not the way to deal with it. The reason we have child support laws is to make sure that children are financially taken care of. We have far to many Fatherless children where the Fathers have simply disappeared to escape paying for their children. I think all parents who fail to provide for their children should be held accountable.
