softail Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 From what I have read, on average we can expect to pay $250,000 in retirement for health related costs, from co-pays to health care premiums. Not a lot of people have that kind of money. Now as far a shipping people off to foreign countries and dropping them off in retirement homes, most people who have never traveled much would not find this appealing at all. Not sure what the answer is but all I know it that "if it's something that you absolutely have to have, it's going to be expensive". i am bob Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I agree that being forced to leave the country you love just because you need help in your daily living is inhumane. For others it may be heaven to be able to live in the warm and sunshine and, ok, more than just a little rain but this may be what they prefer. It's a catch 22 if forced but great if given the choice! And I'm pretty sure what a lot of those answers would be if the members of this forum were asked to decide.
stevewool Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 over here in the damp wet part of the world named England, if you do reach the age to retire can you afford it, i dont think so, not at this rate and how we live our lives too, what happens if you become in firm and you cannot live alone and have to go into care well they take your home of you and you are allowed to keep a little in savings the rest goes towards your upkeep, i am sure my home will be well spent on my upkeep over in the phils, a friend whos older family member has just gone into a home just had to sell there home to pay for the care which is over £500 a week, what would the cost be over in the phils

If you have nobody in the UK to look after you then why shouldn't you pay for help by selling your house? If you cannot look after yourself you do not need a house and if there is no family member willing to care for you then there is no one who deserves to inherit your house. stevewool Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 i have not a problem with helping pay for your keep, but there has to be a limit, does it cost £500 a week to keep someone, who knows , but i am sure if they had to give you £500 a week to look after yourself they would be that many rings to jump into and that many clauses to get out of, there is not often the case where there is no one to inherit the house and if that was the case sure it would only go to the goverment anyway
i am bob Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 What if you have an older couple? One needs to live in an Assisted Nursing Home? Where does the other go when the house is sold to pay for the first one? That is the problem! Thankfully my father has insurance that pays for my mom's care in an Assisted Nursing Home following her stroke and my father still has a place to live. stevewool Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 you do not realize until you are older how things work, a few years ago everyone was told buy your own house its the bset thing that you can do, and thousands did this, thousands also did not they lived in the coucil house and everyone was happy going there differant ways, now when you get older and the goverment cannot affored to look after you those in the council house gets took into homes and are giving most things, or everything you need free, those who has there own house, well you have a lot of money there so you seel your house then you can give us a percentage of the sale ie £100000, £20000 goes to the kids the rest pays for your upkeep and if you have more then i think £13000 in savings they take that from you too, so the moral is dont have any savings dont own your house and in the end you all get the same treatment, jobs a good un

i am bob Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Don't know about the UK but here in Canada (as far as I know) there is a payment required. Some are covered by private insurance, others are covered through government, some are paid by pocket. My father was lucky as he has his own medical insurance plan (as do I). My daughter is covered by the government as she was born disabled and would not be able to hold down a "regular" job - she lives in a "Group Home" for young adults. Or, as she calls it, her "own apartment".

Unless something has changed very recently? Health and social welfare (such as retirement provision) are devolved services in the UK. If the couple were living in either Wales or Scotland, then you'd be right but I know of a couple who were forced to sell their London flat when one of them required residential care. The other half of that couple went into rented accommodation.
