You know what the hospital staff are thinking, he's a rich foreigner and is trying to get away without paying his bill.  Its very hard for a Filipino to believe that a foreigner is not rich. Doctors are not exempt from being ignorant.

PhilHealth is very easy to get so I don't know why all foreigners living in the Philippines don't have it. At least it would have helped pay part of his bill.  And, in case you don't know the rules have changed, you don't have to be married to a Filipina now.

I don't think the amount Philhealth would have paid out would have got him out of this situation, They have a limit to what they pay out.

While there is a pay out limit, Philhealth has a negotiated rate with the hospitals and medical clinics. The charges for hospital services and doctors' fee may have been more reasonable and possibly affordable. A walk-in with no insurance who looks foreign is fair game. The sky's the limit in terms of what they can charge.

Yes. everyone "have to" have PhilHealth.

NOTE! It's possibility to get more persons in ONE insurance.

(I don't know about situation for "volontary insurance", but when geting it through employment/own company, then can spouse, own kids and parents be attached. At least I have been told so  :)

Out of a million it may have knocked off p50k. Maybe, because there is a limit. My wife's hospital bill from Oct was p120k something; the total philhealth "negotiated" payment was 11k (after the dr got 40% of it). That's just an example but anyone thinking Philhealth is the answer for a major operation or catastrophic medical event is in for a rude surprise. He should have had full medical insurance. Probably a lot more to this story then the article.

Very well said..  :AddEmoticons04230:

but its better than nothing.

perhaps it can give someone some room to"negotiate"

example  if 10000 is due, then w/philhealth reduces it to 8000,

thats 2000 saved,

no reason that 1 doesn't obtain it, Full medical insurance I can understand as so many variables come in to play,

does 1 obtain insurance here(rp) or from an overseas provider?

this has been discussed in other topics

NOT having PhilHealth as a much covering, because I know it just cover small part, BUT:

1. If you come to hospital without PhilHealt OR enough cash, it's a big risk you will not be treated at all in hasty case either. Iiiiii! Philhealth SOLVE that (at least in many hospitals.)

2. And as someone else wrote, PhilHealth don't let hospitals take "kano prices" =You get a skilled price negotiator for free

There are Philhealth offices throughout the country, any of them can tell you what it is and is not.
