ibemarshall Posted February 26, 2013 Author Posted February 26, 2013 (edited) Your detailed information is much appreciated and welcomed as I know from your previous posts you are a 'top shelf' resource on such subjects IMHO. I am slinging a 3 yo Compac laptop and a Nexus Android tablet (for wife) plus two less-current smartphones. I am set up to use the following VPN on this trip: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ Although they do not have a Philippines gateway (to use for .ph sites) there are both stateside and UK gateways among others, I will use more frequently. I can also have up to three (3) concurrent logins and all of my hardware is viable using this provider. The plan I have in place is to use Skype Premium for stateside phone service to keep in touch with friends and family. The two previous trips in 2008 and 2010 I dragged Magicjack along, with disappointing and uneven results. Accessing the streaming sites like BBC, Hulu, Amazon Prime and Netflix is much more of a secondary concern for this trip. Of course when I jump over fulltime in 1,039 days I will be much more interested in all of the above. I use Teamviewer (free version) for work related support and you have a great point- that type of interface would work for some of the folks here on the forum that are traveling incountry. There is also all of the cloud storage options (most with free option level) available with the likes of dropbox, box, google drive, skydrive etc. These could be used for remote access as well. Thanks for the post ~ Cheers! Edited February 26, 2013 by ibemarshall

jkim248 Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Porn is illegal in Philippines I did not know this... So if a person wants porn, they have to get it live? :mocking: And I'm embarrassed to know this... I just like to know what is legal and illegal in the countries I go to. Try to stay out of trouble. I'm not a lawyer so please take my post with grain of salt. I think my resource was wikipedia.com :1 (103): The girls here are pretty ballsy. This one store clerk started hitting on me while my wife was in the dressing room tying out clothes! The KTVs and bars and such, I think there are other forums for that. Not an expert at all on this. What does KTV stand for anyway? Korean Tele Vision? Karaoke T. V. Something?
MikeB Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Currently I have PDLT 10 Mbps connection which I get about 9 Mbps to servers in Philippines (speedtest.net) But when I use StrongVPN to San Francisco static server, most times I get LESS THAN 1 Mbps! with Latency of about 400ms! I'm using the StrongVPN server in San Francisco and my connection speed is almost exactly the same with or without VPN. There's a little overhead but nothing like that.
jkim248 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Following MikeB's advice, I talked to StrongVPN technical support to try to figure out why my connection was so slow. Turns out I was using PPTP for my router which is really slow and not supported anymore. So, got that over to OpenVPN and also downloaded StrongVPN's new Windows Client. Doing that, I got almost full DSL speed. Around 8.5 Mbps. BUT... It seems to be dependent on time of day. In the morning, it was almost full DSL speed but once the Malls/Internet Cafe's opened, I seem to be hovering around 3 Mbps with Windows Client and around 1.5 Mbps with router OpenVPN. I guess I'll test out the speed throughout the day. Not sure if anybody is interested anymore
MikeB Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Turns out I was using PPTP for my router which is really slow and not supported anymore. Their own web site states that PPTP usually offers a faster connection then OpenVPN - http://www.strongvpn.com/compare.shtml Since OpenVPN has stronger encryption it has more overhead. Unsupported by whom - them or Microsoft? If they're selling it, they must be supporting it. It sounds like they pushed you into a more expensive package which is exactly what they do. Since your speeds are considerably slower using PPTP they should have first steered you to their own documentation for adjusting the MTU size - http://www.strongvpn.com/instr.shtml

jkim248 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 OpenVPN and PPTP, I get these confused sometimes. I use the PPTP for Windows 7 and iOS devices. This is probably what most people want and need. I voluntarily added OpenVPN for my Buffalo router so that all traffic through that router goes through U.S. based VPN. It was one of the easiest way to connect my XBox 360 (US Version) to XBox Live. Plus Apple TV (So I can access Netflix and some radio sites through these devices.) I don't remember but I think they required me to get a PPTP to get the OpenVPN account. Otherwise I would have just get OpenVPN and connected to the Non-VPN router or VPN router depending on need. I'll check on this. Maybe I can save few bucks. I suppose I could have set up one of my Laptops to act as a Media server, Netflix server, traffic router through VPN, etc. But less work means more time for me to play. :-) My company has more expats coming into Cebu for big recruitment push and they're asking about the internet here, so I'll test out the connection speed throughout the day and report back later.
