Semi-technical explanation follows for those interested.

......for example, today you can buy a Nexus 4 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip which should cut it if the memory is boosted - afterall, it is an advanced PC on a chip itself...... I would say within 2 to 3 years, we will be seeing phones with more processing power than we do in the top PCs today.

Prior to my job as a bench tech at a local casino, I worked at Qualcomm Telecommunications down

in San Diego, CA.  Believe me, Qualcomm have some of brightest hardware and software geeks.

I was on the ground floor when they launch their newest technology called CDMA in the mid 1990's.

Personally, I would rather go back to the basic: rugged and reliable no matter how remote you are.

All the bells and whistles can take a dive.  The below image would be my choice.  It can be used as

a weapon, a hammer or maybe a bottle opener.....he, he.

In my best Mae West accent  ..... "is that a gun (cell phone) in your pocket ..... or are you just happy to see me" ......

Ok, so I am going to dredge up this old thread. I think the answer could be both. Things seem to have come a long way in the last year plus. I have been looking at a phone that will be intriduced shortly that is supposed to have bluetooth that I could use for mouse and keyboard bluetooth speakers or game controller, On The Go [OTG] to hook up to an external hard drive via a cable with a power input so it charges the phone at the same time and Miracast to cast the screen of the phone to a smart tv or other receiver.

This is no big deal when you first look at it because it has been doable with DLNA digital living native alliance as long as you had wifi and compatible hardware but there was lag in the system which as anyone trying to play a game will tell you is not good. Peer to peer should not have a noticeable lag, no more than your bluetooth controller for PS3-4. You may also be paying for two data plans, one for your phone for when you leave the house and of course internet for your home. If you have adequate broadband where you live, your phone would be the only data plan you would need.

The truly amazing thing is there is going to be a local 7k php phone capable of being the center of this if it's announced specs are to be believed, the Starmobile Turbo. With only 1 GB ram it is not going to replace a full tilt gaming computer but then I could not pocket a full tilt gaming computer and go out on a date.

I probably should have said the other amazing thing besides the price of a smart tv! Not all is lost though, there is a set top box with two HDMI ports which also takes input from Miracast and has RCA output that costs $80 online, if your television is a dinosaur like mine. I forget the name and model of the box but did look and it was available at Amazon. I'm not bringing my dinosaur of a television so I will be in the market for a combination TV/ large computer monitor anyway.

Worst case I always have my cheap business laptop if I need an optical drive but the laptop does not pocket well either. It may not work for me but it will be fun trying. God knows I have blown alot more money with nothing to show for it and the mouse, keyboard and speakers will work with my laptop which also has HDMI out so I could use the tv/monitor still. I don't think I have alot to lose. It may not work for everyone though.
