FlyAway Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I think this whole incident was a crime of opportunity. We hear about tag team criminal groups all the time. You are not fighting back against a lone thief. In Philippines it is usually always going to be multiple attackers. You just do not see all of them. When it comes down to fighting back, I feel it is a natural instinct to protect what is yours. If someone grabs something you have naturally you will pull it back. From the reports of this incident they grabbed first and then pulled the gun and shot the guy? A friend of mine was held up in Makati a few years ago at a McDonald's. He was sitting down eating breakfast when a guy came up, flashed a badge and a holstered gun and said step outside. The guy pointed to a partner across the room who flashed a badge and gun to. Once outside they opened my friends wallet and took out the $100 US bill and the Peso's. Gave him back the wallet and went on their way. Blames himself for loosing so much money though. He usually does not carry that much. This was in the early morning hours to.
Bruce Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I have had about 9 years in Cebu, never heard of a vigilante group there ?. That does not mean that WE are not watching you.........You simply have not yet angered us...... Yet. :whistling:
Forum Support Old55 Posted March 10, 2013 Forum Support Posted March 10, 2013 From what the papers say over the years it seems most often a gang or team. It's likely a member working inside saw the poor guy get money from an ATM machine inside the casino or hotel safe tipped off the gang waiting outside for an opportunity.
Jollygoodfellow Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 And... assuming there will be some members advocating that old favorite.... do nothing but comply with any demands..... Well there are no shortage of news reports with the family saying WHY? They got what they wanted.... he did not fight back... why did that have to shoot him? In some cases the person being robbed still gets killed but I think I would rather take the risk and give it to them because not every case ends in death. Your logic is since you are going to die fight back but you are probably and in most cases making a bad situation worse, besides if their going to kill you its best to give them money with no blood spattered on it just to be nice about things. Tom... We need a PLAN! Suppose we meet up in Cebu, have a nice dinner, the wives jibber jabbering in one of the Philippine dialects as we leave the restaurant and are waiting for a cab.... A man steps out of the shadows and has a gun and demands our money. So here is the PLAN...... You, drop to your knees, and start screaming TAKE ME! TAKE ME! I have lived a long full live... there are no challenges left for me... OH PLEASE! If you are going to shoot someone... TAKE ME!... And please remember Tom, no 'strong Ozzy accent' as he may not be able to understand... use your TV presenter voice.... So as you are on your knees, wailing on about your life and how you are willingly giving it up to save us.... BANG! BANG! BANG! as you hear 3 shots ring out and the robber boy drops dead... Oh! Did I forget to mention that Pam has a gun permit? Sorry mate.... Must slipped my mind....... :541: But a good plan... right? Well in this case from what I read, a gun was not produced until after the person decided to fight for his money, could have been a different ending but some like yourself who have a target on your head will possible make a mistake one day. Call me bubba Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 here is the latest story I have seen on this case/ Police investigators are studying the footage taken by a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera of the three suspects who robbed and killed a French tourist in front of a Pasay hotel in the hopes that it would help in the immediate resolution of the case. “We have some leads about the identity of one of the three suspects but we can’t reveal it yet,” said Chief Supt. Jose Erwin Villacorte, Southern Police District (SPD) director. French tourist Pierre Paul Franz Hofman, 68, was shot dead when he refused to give his bag to robbers on the morning of March 8, right in front of Heritage Hotel at the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Edsa. The French national and his two companions were waiting for a taxi on Edsa to take them to a bus terminal when they were approached by three men on a motorcycle. The Pasay police on Saturday released a computer-generated image of one of the three suspects based on the description given by a witness and the images taken by a CCTV camera at the hotel. The witness and one of the victim’s companions described the robber as between 5’5” and 5’57″ in height and of medium build. The area’s precinct commander, Insp. Jolly Soriano, remained in his post after Villacorte asked National Capital Regional Police Office chief Director Leonardo Espina to give him a chance to “redeem himself” by working on the case. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/371315/cops-hope-cctv-footage-will-lead-to-tourists-killer
Dave Hounddriver Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 The witness and one of the victim’s companions described the robber as between 5’5” and 5’57″ in height and of medium build. If they identified the robber as male, that and the description here should narrow it down to 50% of the indigenous population.
Americano Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 50% ? Lets see if we can improve the percentage. The suspect was a male with black hair, not very tall, tan skin color, and Asian facial features. Well, its still just 50%, but I'm sure they can find him with such a good description. Popular Post Will Posted March 11, 2013 Popular Post Posted March 11, 2013 I don't know how many of you have been actual victims of this type of crime but I have, and you don't REALLY know how you will react in that situation. I actually surprised myself when I stood up to several weapon holding thugs. It pissed me off more than anything that I was in that situation. Luckily, I was able to get outta there without being killed (some guys walking around a corner of a building scared them off) but I didn't fully realize what had happened until much later. I was able to burn one of the bastards with a cigarette I was smoking at the time. Just saying, you don't know what you will do in that situation.
Popular Post sjp52 Posted March 11, 2013 Popular Post Posted March 11, 2013 (edited) Well a gun pointed at me tends to turn me to mush these days. From what I have read, They are not afraid to use it and usually do. One time when I was young I was in a bar in the states (Detroit) and when I was leaving a short guy came up to me when I was outside and stuck a gun in my chest and said give me your money. In a split second I had grabbed that gun from him and started to beat him in the head with it. He was just as surprised as I was at what I had done. That liquid courage can be pretty dangerous stuff sometimes. Any other time I would have probably pissed my pants or worse. lol.
