In most LCDs I've serviced, it was mostly inverter failure.

This particular casino has over 3,000 state of art slot machines.

Where is this casino? Las Vegas maybe. The new 'Solaire' in Manila has only 1200 machines. There are only 5,385 machines in all of PI. PI needs you guys here to fix the slots both in Bacolod and in Cebu as at least 25% of the machines are "out of service" at any given time. I have advised a few of the unemployed Filipinos to train for that as there is a need and always will be for a slot tech. Manila is building 3 more casinos. Cebu has no TITO (ticket in ticket out) machines and Bacolod has maybe 18 but only 10 are working at any given time. "State of the art" in PI means Picasso era.

The casino is question is Pechanga Resort and Casino located in southern California.  It is the largest

in the state and is managed by native American Indians.  At one time we had nearly 5,000 slot machines

with a 98% operational status.

Anyway, getting back to LED type TV's.  Rather than the thin florescent tubes that provides back light,

the latest technology now are rows of light emitting diodes (LED) which are more energy efficient and

improves brightness, contrast and black levels.

The price will eventually come down but all the models are pretty thin and very lightweight.  I have seen

a 50" LED TV less than 2" thick.  They are still called LCD's but with LED back light system.

Respectfully -- Jake

Yeah, we can talk like geeks anytime and any day on this forum. Actually, it's not the irate customer's fingers that does the damage.....it's the punch through with their fist! Most of the time, I get lucky just replacing the damage touchscreen, mostly made by 3M. I replace about 3 touchscreen per month due to severe scratches made by their lucky charms (metal Budhas) or diamond rings. Once repairs or replacement are completed, I perform a TS calibration and also a video calibration using a color bar and pattern generator. A few dead or continuously on pixels are not that critical in gaming electronics, so I return the LCD monitors back to the casino floor. This particular casino has over 3,000 state of art slot machines. In my 35 plus years as senior ET in the US Navy, gaming and commercial electronics, I still find this statement true about general electronics: it's all FM. For example, the term LCD -- liquid crystal display. When was the last time you held a crystal that was liquid?? See....it's all F..... magic!

Don't tempt me with the geek-talk invitation!  Sounds like they keep you busy there.  Compared to the first computers and electronics I had 30+ years ago some of the new stuff is pretty FM, alright.  One of my coworkers is a chemist who has spent his whole career working on LC materials.  Pretty crazy stuff.  Keep on soldering...

That is a nice price for a 50 inch LCD last year.  LCD's are hard to find now and I was perfectly happy with the technology.  I was in Ocampo yesterday and didn't notice Sony, only LG and off-brands, but I may have walked right by them and ignored them.  I have been biased against Sony for many years because of all the proprietary crap they pull, but they do have some fine products and I would consider one of their TVs.  I will stop by again and take a look.

Seems that most here are LED or Plasma.  Jake and Dougbert, are Plasmas still energy hogs and will they last?  I'm talking about TVs, not slot machines!   :bash:    :hystery:

Hey OMW,

Generally speaking, plasma TV's will consume more juice than a similar size LCD.  The plasma type are

still thicker and heavier.  Another disadvantage is the problem with burn through with a plasma screen.

In a casino environment, we would replace a 70" plasma every year because of the residual ghost effects

that are permanently burned on the screen.  In the consumer market, you may not even develop those

ghost effects.

No matter which type of LCD or plasma TV, I immediately go into the menu and decrease the brightness,

contrast and the amount of back light.  I also make the viewing area (living or family room) darker, even

during the day.  One more thing -- in my opinion, anything over 46" may be a burden when you're moving

every few years in the Philippines.  Especially if your new place is upstairs, around tight corners....moving

that big 55", now a two man operation will be more delicate.

OMW. did you ask the salesman at store?I got my Sony purchased and delivered.over the phone, COD. they even threw in a Sony dvd player, for cash  sale on tv. they only had 2 left when i got mine, none were on desplay. i had to ask for mine. they were hard on selling me a 46inch LG.  Try the Royal duty free store in base , one of my tenants work there and said he has seen some nice bigscreen s there tanks  ej.

Thanks for the link Jake!  The latest plasmas sound good except for the power consumption.

55 inches is ridiculously expensive here, so I will not be going there. 46 or 50 might be possible.  We found a website that has TVs:

http://www.lazada.com.ph/shop-tv-video/?display_size=40-50

I'm not sure how long they have been around but maybe I will be the first sucker to give them a try!  Prices seem good and they have a Monday special 10% off up to p5000 if you use Mastercard.  As long as I am using Mastercard I am protected, in case there is something bogus about the company.

On a side note, I think we found a good source here in Subic for handmade modern furniture.  This guy built all the cabinets in our house and I have seen some of his other work.  He does not use solid wood (unless you want him too, for higher costs), which is fine with me.  He uses quality wood veneer products.  He is building us a TV stand about 76" X 24" X 24", 2 drawers and 4 shelves, for p6800.  Far less than you can get anything similar for in a store.  It should be ready next week, and if all is well, I will probably order some other things.
