BAGUIO, Philippines -- At least 13 people died when the van they were riding in plunged into a deep ravine in the mountainous northern Philippines, officials said Sunday.
The van veered off a mountain road in remote Buguias town in Benguet province on Saturday and plummeted into a 90-meter (295-foot) deep ravine, initially killing 10 people. Two more victims died later Saturday and another victim died in a hospital on Sunday, Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan said.
Five other people survived with injuries, Fongwan said by telephone, adding one of the 19 people in the van managed to jump out before the van went over the cliff.
The victims were mostly members of a family who attended an election victory party for a town mayor. Investigators were trying to determine if the driver, who was among the survivors, was at fault or if the van he was driving had mechanical defects, Fongwan said.
Fog apparently hampered road visibility at the time of the accident, police officer Jefferson Lopez said.
The accident was the deadliest so far this year in the northern region, a scenic agricultural and tourist destination 250 kilometres (155 miles) north of Manila where many mountain roads lack railings, lights and safety signs.
Reckless driving, neglected vehicles and roads, and poor enforcement of traffic laws have been blamed for the many deadly road accidents in the Philippines.

Very sad.  Appears to be a jeepney and the photo name mentions jeepney.

So sad these tragedies have to happen so often. We hear about these incidence so often it sort of makes us numb to them.

Bald tires? Could be. Reminds me of all the roadside "Vulcanizing" businesses in Mindanao. Hard to go a kilometer or two without passing by one. Scary thought to me having someone poor hot rubber on a tire in a cheap attempt to extend the life. Past experience from being in a wreck a few years ago now makes me look at tires all the time.

Funny thing you mentioning bald tires ..... we just had 4 brand new Goodyear Wrangler HP tires put on as I got tired (no pun intended) of adding air to the old ones .... anyway we kept the old ones and brought them home to plant vegetables in ..... tomatoes .... peppers ... onions and later something else .... well to make a long story short I cut the sidewall off one side so we could get more dirt in them and the neighbors pitched a fit ..... they said why didn't you sell them ... those are to good to throw away ..... I got price quoits of from p250 to p1000 EACH ..... but of course that is just what they thought ... no actual offers ..... here they drive them till the belts start showing threw .... than if they still hold air they sell them to someone else ..... :hystery: :hystery:

:cheersty:
