sjp52 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 People are people. Expect that. In the Philippine culture, your wife is known as a lottery winner. As long as tour wife is not a 'mole' or a 'sleeper agent', you can over come this. Posts above talk about a budget. That is good. However, like welfare / dole systems, if the person(s) getting the help knows it is a monthly thing and that amount available is renewable on the 3rd of the month, expect them to start having emergencies around the 1st of the month. I would set a limit and use for educational needs. As for healthcare, with Philhealth as cheap as it is, you can buy a policy per month for the indivdual family members. Around 1,000p total per year last I saw. Maybe a bit more now. BUT you buy that policy and then you can refuse to pay for any medical emergencies for that person. I think it is 200 pesos per month now for a person but I believe that covers that person and their immediate family members ( her kids and her parents ). Thats what I have heard
Bruce Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I think it is 200 pesos per month now for a person but I believe that covers that person and their immediate family members ( her kids and her parents ). Thats what I have heard Sounds like a workable number for me. Buy for 5 family members and pay 1,000p a month is a deal. Parents, sisters / brothers or more. Spending a 1,000p a month is much cheaper than paying out the nose for multiple medical emergencies. And since the money is paid to philhealth and the family members know that do not get the money, I would expect less emergencies!
Mike S Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Steve are you guys still in England or here in the Phils ..... if you are in England it is almost going to be impossible to control except by saying NO .... if you are here do as some have suggested and buy the school supplies yourselves and if not nearby send them by LBC (it will be cheaper in the long run) ..... her sister needs a washing machine ..... come on now hasn't she ever heard of washing cloths by hand 89% of all Filipinas do it so why shouldn't she .... my asawa refuses to have one and none of her relatives that I know of have one either ..... unless you get a real washing machine the small plastic ones are just about worthless and waste water and electricity ..... my god man if she has kids she should start teaching them to wash their own clothes .... my sister-in-law has 2 kids in college and 3 in grade school ... they all wash their own clothes out by the hand pump ..... no big deal .... she is a school teacher and works all day so the kids need to learn responsibilities ..... they even prepare their own breakfast ... taking turns using the rice cooker .... Steve you and your wife need to sit down and have a heart to heart conversation and listen to what each other is saying .... if she is willing to go to work to support her family's cravings (different from needs) because she feels bad about saying no ..... than maybe that is the answer as long as part of her salary goes to you guys living expenses ..... then if a real emergency comes along you can chip in to help out .... as has been mentioned above it will eventually drive a wedge between the 2 of you ..... and the family will go on about their business just like before you entered into the picture ..... am I again being cruel .... nope just the way it is here .... JMHO  :cheersty:
