Question For Jjr (And Anyone Else)

JJR, I thought you might know something about this.

At Baypointe Hospital here in SBFZ, they have a shareholder program.  You become a shareholder by investing an amount (I think it is p150,000 but don't quote me) and then you and your dependents receive discounts on services.  They state 25-50 % discounts.  I believe that the discounts apply to all Unihealth hospitals.  You also probably get some kind of priority / special treatment at the hospital, I would imagine.

Here is a link but they don't have any detail there.  I might ask about it tomorrow as I think I am going to the dentist there tomorrow.

Have you ever heard of this type of plan in the Philippines?  It is almost like insurance, but you pay once and get lifetime benefits.  The dentist there mentioned that a lot of expats are buying it.  True or not, I don't know, but I like the dentist and she might become our family dentist.  I have a lot of non-critical / cosmetic dental work to get done in the next year and maybe I can save on the already reasonable prices.  We also have have used the hospital several times and find the fees reasonable.

I see some risks but it might be something to consider.

Questions I will have for them:

What happens to your shares when you die?

What happens if Unihealth goes bankrupt, etc.?

What happens if Unihealth sells Baypointe?

Etc., etc.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Don

I am not familiar with the specific program offered by Unihealth and Baypointe. Make sure the offer is shares (stocks) in the corporation rather than just an large advance payment in exchange for discounted prices. The problem with this type of program is you are stuck with the company. What happens if you decide another service provider is better? Can you sell the shares back to the company or through an open exchange like the Philippine Stock Exchange?

The questions you asked are valid.

A dentist where I am tried the "advance" payment method, that allegedly got you lower fees and a quicker appointment.

Well......he left town soon thereafter. No recourse for the patients who did opt into this program.....just gone!!

Buyer beware advice, is advice well taken.

I am not particularly impressed with Baypointe. It's more of a "clinic" than a true hospital. Yes they do have emergency care. But go there for routine care and you can sit for hours on certain days of the week waiting in line to be seen. The dentist I used there was good but not cheap.

Medical City is opening a brand new hospital (being constructed right now) at Clark Freeport next to the Clark South SCTEX exit. If they perform as well as the one in Ortigas, this will be my preferred health care provider of choice.

We have not had a bad experience at Baypointe but the jury is still out.  We have only been there for very minor stuff.  We never had a long wait yet.  Always less than 30 minutes.

We have met a few doctors we like now and most doctors here are available in several locations.  We met one at Our Lady Of Lourdes over in Barrio Baretto and I was surprised by the hospital.  Fairly modern, big, roomy and clean.  There was hardly anyone there the day we went.
