JJReyes Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 We had dinner last night at "Casablanca," a Moroccan restaurant. Just like the Philippines, you eat with fingers, but using your right hand only. You wash at the table and instead of napkins, the restaurant gives you hand towels. It's more of a novelty so our visiting granddaughter could experience a new cuisine. The food was "so-so" and the minimum Prix Fix is $39.50 per person. With six adults plus a child at half price, mandatory tip of 18%, the bill was $300. At P12,900, we consider this a one time experience.
Thomas Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 the bill was $300. At P12,900, we consider this a one time experience. I would concider it a none time experience  (But I'm different from many people, I don't like to go to restaurants at all, and do it only when I have to, as when travelling, when business contacts expect it, or if my future wife will demand it - but if she will demand it any often, then she will not be my future wife :hystery: (because she wouldn't suit to the lifestyle I like.)
GregZ Posted July 5, 2013 Author Posted July 5, 2013 I've uploaded pictures here from our trip to Claveria and Balingoan. Both are on Mindanao; former in the mountains and latter along the coast. Claveria, gone native. In the picture here I held the chicken and my buddy cut his neck; I held him (the chicken not my buddy) over the bowl to catch the blood. The chicken did not seem to mind much so don't be calliing ASPCA. Balingoan, not so much native... really GOOD food. We were there for a christening where I became an International Godfather. http://www.philippines-expats.com/gallery/album/248-mindanao/
Daydreamer Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 Funny thing is that at Langford's Place (a restaurant near SM city) serves Filipino a fork & spoon and foreigners a fork & knife. They know! If you think about it, without the prejudice of your upbringing, eating with a spoon & fork makes more sense than a knife and fork. Chinese are astonished that Westerns cut their meat and poultry at the table. That's suppose to be done in the kitchen. The food is served bite size so you can pick it up with chopsticks....... Well my girlfriend says they cut the food into bite size pieces while cooking. But I have to cut everything into 2 or 3 pieces... they must take giant bites here ha ha Yes they do! Had Lechon for first time, had to cut it down a little bit smaller. I could've sworn they gave me half the hog!
Daydreamer Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 If you put chicken in front of this "Westerner", I won't be using a fork, knife or anything unless its in some kind of soup then its a spoon! But just using one hand?!? I need both one for tearing and one for cramming :hystery:
GregZ Posted July 19, 2013 Author Posted July 19, 2013 I am currently native training, on food anyway. This is what I ate last night. These are 2 chicken heads split in half and put on a stick for traditional grilling. Cost=2 peso cooked and ready for YOU to eat. This was the second time I ate them. The first time went great. This time.... hmmm, when I bit down on the eye and it squirted into my mouth I stopped. Squirting out of my mouth would have been no better. :hystery: I was not prepared for that one. My lovely wife said, "Thanks for trying." :541: I told her, "I am not DONE with them. I am just done with them for tonight." I can hardly wait to try again... I'll be ready for the eye! :7_4_17[1]: If you eat these be aware of all the bones. Either put the whole thing in your mouth and work the bones out (seemed to work better) or try and pick the 'other' things off the bones and ENJOY! If you are looking for the eye, look left of center in this picture. The other side showed that it is a lot bigger than it appears in the picture. If I knew that before hand I would have another picture of the other side. Maybe next time!

Your signature quotation says it all -- With a POSITIVE ATTITUDE, SUCCESS is the ONLY possible OUTCOME! You're more native than I am! I need plenty of San Magoo to quickly wash it down and then use one of the bones for my toothpick.....he, he. Good one GregZ!
