Americano Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 My wife is very good at pronouncing English words correctly but I just remembered one word that I always hear her and the sales girls say when I'm with her while she is shopping for clothes. In stead of saying medium they all say me jum. Somehow the d becomes a j. "Do you have this shirt in a mejum?" "Sorry ma'am mejum is out of stock." I got to remember to teach her how to say it correctly. Oh, I just remembered another one. Instead of saying ma'am they say mum. Mum do you want a mejum?
Popular Post Ruddy_Rooster Posted August 22, 2013 Popular Post Posted August 22, 2013 (edited) I always remember my 1st visit to Phils. On week 2 I was just about getting used to my gf's pronunciation and was now on day 2 of meet the family. A real hectic day as it just happened to be a christening and big family do. I felt totally lost with everyone busy preparing mountains of food etc so just went and stood on the balcony where I could hide. After a while a cousin came out and made some small-chat and out of nowhere she asked "are you angry". Strange question I thought but assumed she could sense I was a bit overawed so I just smiled, shook my head and said "no I'm fine, just feeling a bit lost". She didn't seem too impressed and just said "oh". After some more small-talk she again asked if I'm angry, this time I'm feeling a bit agitated which probably showed in my tone "no really, I'm fine". Anyway just after my gf came out much to my relief. I asked her if she could explain to her cousin I'm not angry. After a couple exchanges in Bisayan between them they both burst out laughing when my gf told me "she was asking if you're hungry"....ooops Edited August 22, 2013 by Ruddy_Rooster

robert k Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Not sure but I think the Suzuki Jimny was a copy and mispronounciation of the GMC Jimmy, a style of carryall vehicle. Unless someone knows of the actual meaning of Jimny?

Unless someone knows of the actual meaning of Jimny? Jimny is a cousin to the Jeepney but no relation to the chimney, even though it sounds the same.
