jon1 Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 (edited) You are not a visitor if you are living in the country, You are contributing to their economy,,,You should also be given the same respect they expect from you, People earn your respect, It is not given just because they are Filipino, IMO. I disagree. They will never look at you as anything other than a visitor. You could be supporting a whole extended network of filipinos, have a business employing filipinos and it would never change their prejudice against you. We will always be considered "guests" and never treated as such. There will never be any equality. I am always respectful to the filipinos that I deal with and if none returned, I won't deal with them in the future unless absolutely necessary. Should be given respect is not always gonna happen. Even at home people don't always show respect. Edited August 29, 2013 by jon1
MacBubba Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 However I have found there are two types of Filipinos living here. Those who have nothing and are respectful and kind to everyone including foreigners. Those with money and I don't consider to be Filipinos, but "Wanna be Americans" and have no respect for anyone unless they have more money than they do. Sorry, I cannot agree that Filipinos just fall under one or the other type. There can be ill-mannered people among the poor, and well-mannered ones among the rich. Neither has a monopoly of good or bad traits. Same is true of any nationality. Back to the topic...here's hoping things are settled amicably between the parties involved.
Forum Support Old55 Posted August 29, 2013 Author Forum Support Posted August 29, 2013 MacBubba, thank you for those words of wisdom. I sometimes get off the tracks to do with Filipino Politicians and the powerful familys that pull their strings. We all know there are good ones out there also. I get so frustrated and angry at those petty corrupt little tyrannical mayors who take advantage of the weak and steal from the poor.
paulus Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 We all know the repute of Dutertes family. But what do we know of Michael Hatcher, British-Australian? Is he long term tourist, or has he other interests in Mindanao? And what might be his reputation? And why, after all this time, has he not learnt how to behave in Asian countries? FlyAway Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 And the saga continues..... http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/local-news/2013/08/29/vice-mayor-wont-accept-aussies-apology-300421 Vice mayor won't accept Aussie's apologyThursday, August 29, 2013 DAVAO CITY Vice Mayor Paolo "Pulong" Duterte on Thursday said he will not accept an apology from an Australian national who figured in a heated altercation with the official Wednesday morning. In his "Pulong-Pulong ni Pulong" in Barangay 76-A Bucana, Duterte said he cannot forgive Australian national Michael Hatcher, 73, a retired ship captain, of Queensland, Australia, and who is currently staying at Doña Vicenta Village, Davao City. "Di nako siya pasayluon. Ang akong abogado lang ang motubag sa iya (I will not forgive him. My attorney will answer him)," Duterte said. An official of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Davao City Thursday said Hatcher has a "clean record" at their office. "He has no derogatory record per our office records," BI-Davao City officer in charge Florentino Diputado told Sun.Star Davao in a text message Thursday, referring to Hatcher. On Wednesday, Duterte filed charges of direct assault and frustrated murder against Hatcher before the City Prosecutor's Office (CPO), but the suspect said he was also filing charges against Duterte for abuse of authority. "Ambot lang kung naa bay abuse of authority didto. Kung naa man, di i-file niya ang kaso sa court para matanggal ko sa akong trabaho kung tinuod man (I don't know if it was an a abuse of authority. If there was, then he can file the charges in court so that I can be removed from my work)," the vice mayor said. It can be recalled that Duterte was with Police Officer 2 (PO2) Roy Osiones when the suspect tried to run over them along McArthur Highway, Tahimik Avenue, Bangkal, Davao City. The suspect was onboard a Honda Stream Wagon while Duterte and his convoy boarded a white Nissan Navarra Pick Up, Toyota High Lux Pick Up and a black motorcycle. Hatcher figured in a traffic altercation with Duterte, who claimed that the latter allegedly tried to run over them along McArthur Highway in Bangkal, Davao City. Based on their records, Diputado said the foreigner arrived in the country last June 27. His tourist visa is extended up to October 25, the official said. "But a visa is only a privilege not a right to stay in this country, therefore it can be taken anytime if the foreigner has abused such privilege by violating existing laws, rules, and regulations but after due process," Diputado said. "So there must be a formal complaint to be filed against the said foreigner before the Bureau of Immigration legal office in Manila." Duterte and PO2 Roy Osiones sued Hatcher for direct assault and frustrated murder before the City Prosecutor’s Office (CPO) on Wednesday. Hatcher, on the other hand, said he is also set to file charges against Duterte for abuse of authority, breaking traffic laws and illegal detention.

Brock, You will always be a visitor in the eyes of the Filipino. I agree with what you say but, the upper class Filipino will never pay you the same respect that you show him. It's not in their nature and they will always try to show who has more clout. I try to fit in and keep a low profile because, I know I can't win in a situation like the Aussie gent got caught up in. I respect your opinion and comment.
robert k Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 (edited) I love people who blow a gasket in traffic and it sounds like we have two of them here. I pity the Australian, frustrated murder rap for what should be at most leaving the scene of an accident. If someone really wants to run over you, there is a good chance they will succeed. It also stands to reason that if the Australian was trying to kill the VM that one of his escorts would have been shooting, or what are they there for, not so? Frustrated murder probably because the VM had to step out of the way? What if he was ignored by a car at a crosswalk, would that also be frustrated murder? I'd be curious to see the damage to the vehicles. :) As for the Vice Mayor, I don't know him, but from what can be gleaned from the accounts, he is using his office, outside of his official capacity, and yes it appears to be an abuse of power. Popular Post Jake Posted August 30, 2013 Popular Post Posted August 30, 2013 Hey guys, This latest incident involving a foreigner in trouble will probably fade out and with no final follow ups of what really happen. Right now we are basing our opinions from the limited news coverage. In this case, I would like to hold off my comments until there are more facts or fictions developing. In the meantime gentlemen, please watch your wording here.....you never know who is monitoring the expat forums these days. Papa Carl Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Sorry, I cannot agree that Filipinos just fall under one or the other type. There can be ill-mannered people among the poor, and well-mannered ones among the rich. Neither has a monopoly of good or bad traits. Same is true of any nationality. You are right of course MacBubba. There can be ill-mannered people among the poor, and well-mannered ones among the rich. And you are also correct that neither has a monopoly of good or bad traits. However in reference to this article, I was referring to a Filipino who is well off. I should have said "However I have found that generally there are two types, etc". That statement is more accurate and I would stand on. Having lived in Makati, and been around a great number of Filipinos who were members of the Makati Businessmans Club and who had a great deal of power and money, and then living in Bagong Silang, and been around Filipinos with no power and who own virtually nothing, I certainly was able to draw several distinctions of behaviour between the two groups, and "generally" found that I felt much more welcome and accepted by those in Bagong Silang than in Makati. (This of course might be because one thought they could get something from me, where as the other simply tried their best to take from me.) For one, while living in Makati, Ellie and I suffered some unpleasant remarks and incidents, referring to the fact that I was an older white man, with a much younger Filipina, and our Condo was broken into and remarks left behind by someone. Where as in Bagong Silang, we did not even have to lock our door. I am aware that to make simplistic statements and trying to put everyone into 1 or 2 groups of people is not accurate, and I should have been more careful in my selection of wording.
