I could only imagine a huge crowd not actually waiting for a jeepney with this idea.  :)

Manila to erect Wi-fi ready waiting sheds

Manila: The local government of Manila has approved a project to establish 12 wi-fi ready modern waiting sheds where commuters can use their mobile phones, surf the web, and check emails while waiting for vehicles, most of which are “jeepneys,” a local and longer version of the United States World War II vintage military vehicle.

Commuters, including students from Manila’s university belt, government and private office workers, and tourist spots will have Internet access while commuting, said a statement from Manila’s City Hall.

The plan is to follow the example of Singapore where every spot has Internet access, said a source who was part of the projects’ planning committee.

Establishing comfortable, modern, and state of the art waiting sheds is a must project in Manila, said the same source who requested for anonymity.Manila, an old and historical city, which is graced by the Manila Bay, is fashioning itself as a major tourist spot.

However, its waiting sheds are not yet modern; many of them are already dilapidated.

At the same time, Manila has lagged behind Makati City, the financial district, because it has not yet designated separate waiting sheds for loading and unloading, making travel on its major roads quite chaotic.

Being one of the most congested metro areas in the Philippines, observers have started questioning the practicality of offering Internet access to mobile phone users while commuting on Manila’s busy roads.

Manila’s pickpockets have been discouraging mobile owners to openly use their gadgets while on the road, said Ana Guzman, who works in one of the five-star hotels that dot Manila’s Roxas Boulevard, across Manila Bay.

Internet connection is tempting for any mobile phone user, but in Manila, it would be a very dangerous temptation, said Guzman.

Yup and the snatchers will be waiting right alongside the "commuters (who) use their mobile phones, surf the web, and check emails while waiting for vehicles" ..... my god do you mean someone can't wait 5-10 minutes without getting on the web ..... and what about those that don't have Internet seems to me like a great opportunity to gather at the hot spots like the school kids do now in places like McDoo .... KFC and other fast food places ... just go sometime when the kids are on their school lunch break and see how many just buy a soda and whip out their laptop or cell taking up much needed actual eating room ..... just seems like a waste of money to me .... upgrading the waiting sheds now sounds like a great idea and is needed .... JMHO

Slightly related:....caution.

Yesterday evening, well after dark, I was outside enjoying a bit of cool from the earlier rains.

I noticed a group of about 5 or 6 girls (ages unknown) passing nearby.

Each and everyone of them had their smart phones (large screen models) going and being carried at what appeared to be a level for viewing the screen.

Facebook can be addicting. (rampant assumption)

Now it hits my ding ding dong bells!!!!

as for the wifi ready standing sheds...first and foremost make proper standing sheds where the bus/jeepney/tricycle/vehicle creation...stops in front of it to pick up and drop passengers and not in the middle of the highway risking everyone's life.

Create a proper public transportation system that these disgrace for the country, they even made them national symbol, the jeepneys etc etc....but let's adopt the pinoy style, smile, grin chk chk, say bahala na and all fine, jinebra pare?

As for the cellphones and ipods-ipads-ipay things...it is AMAZING!!!! All these devices are meant to be used from super busy people who need all their data on the road and in their pocket at all times...they are used from people who do not even need a phone, just a txting and uploading pics to facebook device they need!!!!!

I do not like criticizing others before I look on my self though, so I will speak for my own family!!!!

I personally own two cellphones the youngest one is 5 years old...old craps but hey, they do what I want and need them do and even more. Recently I bought a Samsung tablet just because I was carried by the flow, I never use it.

My son (9 years old) he does not wants a phone, because (clever boy) he does not want his mom calling him on the phone all the time when in computer shop...sending the helper is more than enough he says. But he cannot live without his mini-ipad, I offered him to give him my Samsung and he gives the ipad to his mom (to whom originally belongs) he denies. I cannot understand it, he just plays games, same the Samsung would play, no he wants the ipad because it is better...more expensive in translation.

My wife owns 5-6-7 (I got to count them one day) smart phones included the latest models...both from ipay and Samsung (this s4 thing that whistles all the time). She gets so confused using them that she all the time comes to me to adjust the settings etc...

I was wondering what do they need the extremely expensive gadgets for. Well....she is not asking me for jewelry (which I always buy her because I like seeing them on her) neither expensive brand name clothes (same as the jewelry applies here) but she must have a HUGE suv car and the best cellphone existing....

Not much I can say more, it is the way the culture is here, the trend, the fashion, the social wanna be status etc...

when we talk it she agrees with me and says "yes I agree you are right...but I like them". What to say more...

As for the Romeo's on here...buy her the latest cellphone (800-1000$) she will appreciate it much more than a half carat diamond ring which she will suspect as fake. :)

Even my 30 something daughter has her damn phone within reach EVERYWHERE. On the couch, in the kitchen, the toilet.....damn!!

It's set to alert her when someone posts a message on Facebook.

My gawd of course she has to repond.....with more junk!!

From recipes to reporting a football teams scoring for each and every touchdown.....to spreadiing junk mail.

I sent her a message on one of FB posts and included a link that provided a cure for FB addiction....

She responds: "Really Dad"?....in a smart axx tone that I know oh so well.

I guess if the music is too loud, your too old!!!

No. It's because your hearing aid batteries are dead.
