Markham Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 At a Press Conference yesterday, Davao City's Mayor, Rodrigo Duterte, announced that he is signing an Executive Order which will ban the wearing of sunglasses and hats inside any establishment in the city. The new ordinance which will apply equally to both sexes will cover all public buildings including government offices, shopping malls, bars, restaurants and cinemas and is being introduced following the bombing of two cinemas on Monday evening.Today's Davao edition of SunStar carries the story.
johnb Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 Probably a wise move, but without a hat, I'm going to look silly walking round in my Burka and smoking my pipe :)
Americano Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 (edited) John makes a very good point. Did the mayor forget to include burkas or was he afraid of offending burka wearers? A burka conceals someone's identity more than a hat or sun glasses. Edited September 24, 2013 by Americano
brock Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Our stupid country actually allowed someone to wear the Burka while standing trial for fraud.
Americano Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 (edited) Our stupid country actually allowed someone to wear the Burka while standing trial for fraud. When I saw this statement I said to myself, yeah the USA does some stupid things and then I looked to see who made the post and where you're from. I guess the UK does some stupid things too. A few years ago there was a woman in the USA who insisted that she had the religious right to wear a burka when making the picture to go on her driver license. The state she was living in refused her request so the case went the federal court where she lost. I think the court basically said what good is a picture if you can't identify the person in the picture. My wife is from an area in Mindanao where burkas and other things are worn on the head so I told her about the Mayor's executive order and she thinks the word hat or cap includes anything worn on the head, which is easier than trying to name all of them. If this is the case then an explanation of the word hat/cap should be given in the order and by the news so the people will understand the requirements of the order. brock Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 How would any of you feel about getting on a plane with people who are wearing Burkas ?
FlyAway Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Many banks here in USA have signs up asking people to remove hats and sunglasses upon entry. Nothing really would affect me about the Davao ordinance. I always thought it was polite and etiquette to remove sunglasses and hats when going inside a building anyway. On another note, I remember seeing a 7-11 had a sign up asking people to remove ski masks and unload shotguns.

"I always thought it was polite and etiquette to remove sunglasses and hats when going inside a building anyway." I was taught the same thing since I was a small child. And, I will speak for the US Army since I served in it and worked there for a total of 35 years. Soldiers are required to remove their headgear when entering a building. The word headgear includes anything worn on the head such as a hat, helmet, etc. And, sunglasses are to be worn only under conditions where they are needed and authorized.
Ruddy_Rooster Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 I can't speak for your eras but hats and sunglasses are very much fashion accessories these days. With bags of shopping etc, removing them is a hassle. As for etiquette, in a friendly place I'll oblige. Everywhere else, remove the cameras everywhere I turn then get back to me.
