Papa Carl Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 We may have backed down from China over the Spratly Islands, but we got our own back!! http://goodnewspilipinas.com/2013/08/09/pinoys-dethrone-china-in-singapore-math-competition/ The Philippines has finally dethroned China in an international math competition in Singapore, amassing a whopping haul of 161 medals. Filipino students won a total of 23 gold, 45 silver and 93 bronze medals to emerge as the most bemedalled contingent in the 9th International Mathematics Contest (IMC),. China, which has dominated the IMC for years, fell to second place with 153 medals consisting of 22 gold, 44 silver and 87 bronze. In addition, the Philippines’ Jan Kendrick Ong of Chiang Kai Shek College was judged as the top scorer in the Grade 8 division, according to Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG). “This year is emerging as very fruitful for our young math wizards. The medals won in Singapore are in addition to the medals and awards we won in math contests including in Bulgaria, China and Hong Kong,” Dr. Chua said. About 1,300 students from 10 countries joined the contest. Last year, the Philippines won 96 medals in the IMC and placed second to China. In the Bulgaria International Mathematics Contest (BIMC), held from June 30 to July 5 in Burgas City, the Philippines was crowned as the overall champion in the elementary division and brought home a total of 5 gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze medals, and 8 merit awards in the individual contest. MacBubba Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Nice to see that the list includes Filipinos, and not just Filipino-Chinese. To this day, whenever my wife goes out for lunch with friends (some actuaries), she inevitably ends up with the chore of calculating and divvying up the food, drinks, taxes and tip for the table - no calculator, no phone app needed.
