Medic Mike Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 A lost hiker who was days from death had to eat his beloved pet dog to survive in the wilderness. Marco Lavoie, 44, was trapped with no food in Canada after a bear destroyed his supplies. The Quebec climber was severely ill when he was airlifted to safety last week following a planned three month solo hike. Starving after a bear ransacked his campsite and destroyed his canoe, he was forced to kill and eat his German shepherd who had bravely chased away the animal from camp. Rescued from the Nottaway River wilderness near Montreal, Mr Lavoie had lost half his body weight, had hypothermia and was unable to speak. Survival experts say eating his dog kept him alive. Bushcraft expert Andre Francois Bourbeau said: "He survived because he made good decisions. Eating his dog was one of them. You have to be desperate, but there's no shame in eating the dog. He had to use reason." Survival instructor Caleb Musgrave said: "Up there, in the Canadian shield, there's little plant life to live off, so he would have been slowly, painfully dying when they found him. "It's an amazing feat that he was able to keep himself alive this long with almost no equipment." Dave Hounddriver Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 So if a filipino is trapped in the Philippines with no food then it is ok to eat their pet dog? I know that many do but I don't see the same sympathetic reaction to it.
Papa Carl Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 He could have used one of those 4,000 plus Tim Hortons. No seriously, at 9.98 million square kilometers in total, Canada is the world's second largest country by total area, and the border with the US is the world's longest land border, at 8,891 Kilometers. Canada also has the longest coastline in the world, with a total length of 202,080 Kilometers. And yet has only a population of just over 35 million people. With four-fifths of the population living within 150 kilometers of the US border, and approximately 80% of Canadians living in urban areas, it is no wonder that every year people just disappear in the wilds of Canada. Some disappear from mishap, and others because they want to. It is not unusual for human remains to be found in Canada, and brings to mind how many are never found and just listed as "missing". Enough for the RCMP to have a website dedicated only to "remains of unidentified people found". A beautiful place, but dangerous.
