JMEL Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I have philhealth and may need hernia surgery. Been reading around the web and here... I am guessing P300k is expected, and let's be real, as a USA SSDI recipient I can never save up to afford that. How much is PhilH likely to cover? What would a policy for hospitalization cost? 43yo man.
JJReyes Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I met a medical doctor during the Los Angeles conference. He has a "Surgery on Wheels" charity transporting a container that has been converted into an operating and recovery room to remote towns. It is air conditioned with a water supply and filtration. Power is from a small generator To give you an idea of how much, Dr. Jim's foundation charges $80 for hernia operations or about P3,500. I saw several videos of boys being lifted to the operating table. Their pants are pulled down and the hernia surgery begins. It is completed within one hour and the boys walk away without assistance. Their reward is Jollibee. The $80 amount is sufficient to cover costs. This is the "nuclear" price for hernia operations. You pay much higher because of the extras. For example, is your doctor recommending a one or two days stay at the hospital? Ward or private room? My wife and I will be helping Dr. Jim in marketing and promotion after my March 2014 retirement. The agreement is to start with a publicity stunt. "Dr. Jim to perform 100 circumcisions in a single day. New world record!" We will be soliciting for sponsorship at $25 for each procedure. The advertising is, "Jesus was circumcised. Give the gift of circumcision to a needy child." We will post the procedure on You Tube if that is permitted. I am copying from Bruce's "Philippine Basic Needs" program in Samar. Each boy will hold up a sign with the $25 sponsor's name. We will post the pictures on a website.
MikeB Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 How much is PhilH likely to cover? What would a policy for hospitalization cost? 43yo man. There are several types of hernias, most common being inguinal. Philhealth will probably pay about 10-15% with 40% of that going direct to the doctor and the remainder deducted from the total bill. That's just a ballpark estimate based on my experience, you could ask them. If you purchase private insurance you will probably have to wait a year before having the surgery because most have preexisting condition clauses. The cost would depend on coverage, figure less then $1000 a year for full inpatient coverage.

JJReyes Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 (edited) Medicare rules are changing in 2014. I have Medicare A & B ($104.90 deducted from my monthly Social Security benefits). The co-pay starting 2014 is $4,500 a year. Medicare pays $22,500 and I pay $4,500. After $27,000 in medical bills, Medicare pays the remainder for the year. This is with Kaiser Permanente. Other healthcare insurance programs might be different. For the Philippines, if I were to set aside $1,258.80 ($104.90 x 12) and place $4,500 in a special reserve fund, I can pay my medical expenses. We are still waiting for notification as to 2014 premium increases for Medicare Part B. Edited November 16, 2013 by JJReyes
