northtoalaska Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Hi I've been looking at varies sites and with few exceptions information, let alone accurate information, is rather scarce regarding Southern Leyte. Has anyone heard how badly the bottom third of Leyte got hit?
Jake Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Hi I've been looking at varies sites and with few exceptions information, let alone accurate information, is rather scarce regarding Southern Leyte. Has anyone heard how badly the bottom third of Leyte got hit? Hello NorthtoAlaska, Below quotations was taken from CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/07/world/asia/philippines-typhoon-haiyan/ Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Yolanda, appeared to retain much of its terrifying force as it moved west over the country, with sustained winds of 295 kph, gusts as strong as 360 kph (225 mph). Haiyan's wind strength makes it equivalent to a Cat 5 hurricane. Haiyan is so large in diameter that clouds from it are affecting two-thirds of the country, which stretches more than 1,150 miles. Tropical-storm-force winds are extending 240 kilometers (150 miles) from the typhoon's center. Unfortunately, there has been no news about the southern Leyte. Hope all is well for your friends there. Respectfully -- Jake
Thomas Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Hi I've been looking at varies sites and with few exceptions information, let alone accurate information, is rather scarce regarding Southern Leyte. Has anyone heard how badly the bottom third of Leyte got hit? In an other topic is a report about a place there. His girlfriend and her family had survived, but their cocofarm was destroyed. Electric was out. I suppouse Tacloban was harder hit because of few coasts has such "funnel" shape in the typhon wind direction, making the waves concentrate there.
Popular Post Bigdog Posted November 16, 2013 Popular Post Posted November 16, 2013 My GF and i made a food/medicine run to Ormoc on Thursday to a friend from Alaskas family..they live in the hills above Ormoc City...90% of all the trees are down or snapped in half..most homes are without roofs or just gone..there is food and water available but at steep prices.. the powerlines are down everywhere and will take months to repair..roads are passable now..but everywhere we went people were smiling and helping us get to where we needed to go..i saw no signs of reief stations set up anywhere and only one jeepney of pnp headed out of town..the small businesses are slowly opening back up...i plan on going back with more supplies and tools

Thomas Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 3 npa went into ormoc and were trying to loot and kill people but clashed with military and were killed I have never heared of NPA killing people like that (they attack military, police, some government representatives and people they find behaving very bad.)(Once at Negros the officials CLAIM the NPA killed everyone in a car convoy. except leaving witness so report would be spread the killers has shouted NPA repeetedly. I believe it was a fake attack by officials to try to damage NPA reputation... I suppouse NPA is angry at how the government handle the support at Eastern Visayas, trying to force foreign aid to go through the government to get - unearned - credit, "forgeting" many places where media isn't, so PERHAPS it's true NPA went to take some aid going to Tacloban, finding it unfair damaged parts in Samar didn't get any at all. Perhaps it was /criminals trying to make NPA guilty instead of themselves, /or government people trying to use the situation to damage NPA reputation. It's very good among many people at Samar, finding NPA doing a much better "police work" than the police do... (I have forgot if it was on Cebu or east Mindanao, but one of the forum members told about good experience for himself, NPA stoped his father-in-law from behaving very bad :)
Popular Post Bigdog Posted November 17, 2013 Popular Post Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) there are thousands of trees down in Ormoc and while there i even saw one person with a small saw mill already cutting them into lumber..i also saw alot of people just milling around waiting for help ,there were a few salvaging materials and building shelters, the devistation there is just so overwhelming to the people that many just dont know WHERE to start...the family i took supplies to really started improving thier home after i suggested using salvagable material from all thier houses to expand the one still standing( a 3x3 mtrs shack , home to 5 adults and about 10 kids) we used a tarp i brought and salvaged tin to get the roof expanded and wood and bamboo to expand the walls..when i left the guys were busy splitting bamboo to make a floor..it just seemed like they needed a little nudge to get started , then i was just there for muscle lol..of course the first real meal in days might have been the reason too :)... on the way out we talked to the sawmill guy about paying him to move the mill up the hill to thier property and start cutting lumber there..either for cash or on a lumber share deal.. i plan on making a trip back next week with more supplys and TOOLS , a saw , hammer and nails , bailing wire , a shovel to level and dig water diversion trenches to handle the rain..little things to us but important to them...i was so amazed by the people and thier helpfulness in dire times, we were thanked over and over just for coming by people we didnt even have supplys for...it was hard coming back to LapuLapu where life is pretty much uneffected knowning the trials my new friends in ormoc will be facing in the coming weeks/months or even years wish i knew how to post pictures here Edited November 17, 2013 by Bigdog
