earthdome Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Took me w hi If you ever get into Davao, there isa local coffee that's pretty good... You should be able to get it at the market... Isn't Marbel part of Koronadal City? I've heard there is some really good luck coffee right there! :D Marbel is the old name for Koronadal but everybody uses the old name. I will have a look in the market for coffee as I have only shopped for it in the KCC mall. Took me a while, but finally figured ^this out. I don't plan on ever going south of Cebu island, no mater how "safe" it is. I just don't think I'd feel safe like I do in the rest of the Philippines. Names of cities repeat occasionally throughout the Philippines. Not hard to get confused. I was mixed up over two Dapitans once. Street names can be used more than once in the same city. That is why it is important to include the name of the Barangay where you live in your address.
Markham Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 20 minutes by Jeepney to the SM City in Martina SM City is actually in Ecoland, Bob, which is right next door to Matina Aplaya! :P (Matina covers a huge area of the city, basically south of Bankerohan right down to Ulas, where you'll be turning right to get to Mintal). robert k Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I just got my utility bills for my first full month here in Sibulan, Negros Oriental. Really it was for two months water because I put my deposit on the place to hold it and the landlord had the water turned on to clean the place since it had been vacant. I was outraged and almost asked them it's because I'm a longnose? Just kidding! Two months water was 165 php ($3.75 USD at 44 piso per dollar). Electric, running rice cooker to make pancit, rice, brew coffee and tea, fans, lights and whatever it takes to keep phones and laptop charged, 565 php (12.84 USD @ 44 php per dollar). USD $16.59 for utilities. This is on top of my extravagant rent of 6,000 php a month ( $136 USD @44 php per dollar). The greater outrage is that I have a good landlady who offered that if I gave her the money that she would pay my bills because she had to stand in line and pay hers anyway! I know, I know I should protest such treatment but it's tough when you are a minority here. Did I mention the free Carabao mangos? tree ripened and delicious. True, internet is not the best here, or even what I would call good but I have only tried Globe and Smart broadband so far. I guess I will try Sun before giving up totally on broadband. I don't think it's the area because sometimes I have good connectivity I believe the broadband providers are fiddling with it so you CAN'T consume much bandwidth I am 15 kilometers from the center of Dumaguete where I could get 4G signal but it would be a pain to grab the laptop and go, but I could. I also have to talk with the landlady about her cable and how it's working out. I am leery of contracts. My girl's family have Sky cable about 3 miles from me and they have poor internet but better than I have been getting here with my broadband. This is a decent place to live, I figure the place would rent for $600-$700 a month in the burbs of Ft.Worth Texas. Induction stove top and washing machine are going to be on next months bill and I will update with what it does to my bill. Electric will probably go up but total expenditures down because I will really be able to cook at home and I won't eat out as much (damn you Chowking chicken Laureate!). No refrigerator yet, I go to town every single day, it's no problem to pick something up at the market to cook. I drive my vehicle every day because this is the jungle, anything that doesn't move or only moves slowly or seldom gets reclaimed. I average about 100 php a day for fuel. I save my girls family 20 - 60 php a day in trike rides depending on how many times I'm around to pick up all the kids from the private school at lunch, take them back after and bring them home after school. Mornings, they are on their own. :)

I just signed up for it in Sibulan and they will hook me up 'in a while' which is taken to mean anytime between now and 3 weeks from now. What I like about the plan they are offering is that it is 10Mbs consumable. That means you get to consume up to 15 Gigs a month for 1299 and then you can pay 50 pesos a gig for any additional that you want. For a guy who wants speed over quantity it sounds like a heckuva deal for this size of town.
robert k Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 My girls family has Sky Cable and we were just chatting about seeing if they have service where I am. I'm not far from town, except the direct route has a washed out bridge, which is a mixed blessing, little traffic and noise vs. not so quick access to town/market/GF and family. Frugal me wanted to only have one internet bill, broadband off my phone but 1299 is not going to break the bank either. Thanks for mentioning it. :tiphat:

Dave Hounddriver Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) Is that "up to" 10Mbps? Ahhh yes, that seems to be true of all the service providers but SkyCable 'guarantees' a minimum of 40% of the speed at 80% of the time so that is still 4Mbs and better than the competition, or so it seems to me. Edit: In addition, they have free use (as in not part of the 15 Gig cap) between 2am and 8am if you sign up for it online (after booking and paying for the plan) so theoretically I can download any movies I want at that time - fast and free.
