AllenInWV Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I mentioned elsewhere that I have known three Filipinos in my life. One is my friend Jennifer, another is my internet/shooting buddy Wil, the last is a kid I knew in the Army in Germany back in the late 80s named Aquino. I do not recall his first name, he was always just "Aquino". One thing I DO recall is he claims to have eaten Golden Retriever. LOL No judgment here, just sayin'. Right now, I have three cats, but I'm not exactly a cat person. I like having some animals around and they fit my lifestyle at the moment. I HOPE to have a dog as soon as I have the time to devote to one. A good dog is ALMOST as good as a person. So what are the customs involving pets there? As I recall from Iraq, dogs are not looked upon nicely in the MIddle East, how about in Mindanao? Are there any native breeds? I would think due to the climate, some breeds I'm familiar with here in the US would probably not do too well there. I'm on a roll with these oddball questions. LOL I'm posting them as they occur to me.
Fred & Mimi Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Dogs and cats are everywhere in Phils. Just be aware that if you choose Tarlac Luzon for your home town, you will need to keep a good eye on your beloved dog as that is the dog meat capital of the Philippines from what I've been told. JJReyes Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Dogs are considered "hot" food that increases virility and stamina. It's the same for some areas in China and Korea. Cats for some reason are not considered food. If you are an animal lover, get a cat.
OnMyWay Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Dogs and cats are everywhere in Phils. Yes, but the vast majority are not cared for. They may belong to someone, but they are either allowed to run free or chained up as guard or bark dogs. In both cases they are usually dirty and mangy. Dogs are considered "hot" food that increases virility and stamina. It's the same for some areas in China and Korea. Cats for some reason are not considered food. If you are an animal lover, get a cat. I think that depends on your area and how you care for your dog. If you live in a poor area and let your dog run free, he might not come home one day. Especially if he is well fed! :hystery: If you care for your dog and keep him on a leash, he should be fine. If you are in a nicer area, you will find that many people have indoor dogs and take good care of them. Shih Tzu, Pugs, Beagles and Chihuahua are very popular. Here is Subic Bay Freeport, you see Shih Tzu being carried around in the malls a lot. I never thought I would like a dog like that, but they are great little dogs! In our neighborhood, it is against the rules to let your dog run free, but still many do on our street. However, I would say they are "higher class" street dogs. Not quite as dirty and mangy all the time. In fact, "our dog" is not really our dog. He is our neighbor's Dachshund and he is a great dog, so we enjoy having George spend time with us. He runs free most of the time. He is BFF with our cat Blackie. We adopted Blackie as a street kitty when he was tiny, and he has grown into a really cool cat. He thinks he is a dog. He likes to ride in the car and will jump in on his own sometimes. He likes to put his head out the window and smell the wind. A few days ago, Abby and I went for a morning walk, and Blackie followed us for the entire walk, out and back!
brock Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 It is illegal to eat dogs in the Philippines and can get you a few years in prison, although some people do. An old neighbor of mine in Lahug, A Chinese woman used to buy cats, She would pay more for a pure white one. I was told it was for the fur. AllenInWV Posted November 19, 2013 Author Posted November 19, 2013 That's pretty interesting. I wonder why it's illegal? All dogs are pretty awesome, but some, I just can't get past the looks. Pugs for example. I've known two. Great personalities but OMG! They looked like their eyes were going to pop out of their heads!! LOL I would guess bringing a dog into the RP would be a much bigger hassle than just finding one once I'm here. Do they have animal shelters to adopt strays? Perhaps she used the furs to produce electricity?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Unfortunately animals including pets have a very hard life here, of course some people do care but most don't, the streets are littered with strays many dying others with total loss of hair, inoculations are not common place so Parvo and Rabies is a concern, there is a dog catcher round Cebu, its quite horrendous and the dogs caught are gassed, I say all of this as a dog lover, the only reason we haven't left the Philippines is because we wont leave our dogs, so we will remain till they pass, at one point here my wife and I did some animal rescue for dumped puppies and Kittens, but so many died it was just heartbreaking, you can find just about any breed you want in Cebu, although be-careful with checking out the parents its common for brother and sister dogs to be bred. http://www.ayosdito.ph/Cebu-and-Central-Visayas/Pets-and-Accessories-for-sale-5080 http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/view+category/id/162/province/Cebu+-+Cebu+City/Dogs http://www.locanto.ph/geo/539918/Dogs/803/Cebu-City/ Also consider the cost of veterinary care heart worm tablets can cost 1000 per month depending on the size of your dogs, I don't actually like showing those links, I would guess many are puppy farms, but to answer your question fairly they need to be included, puppies can also be found on sale by venders, there kept till they eat to much then killed or dumped John Edited November 20, 2013 by johnb
