johnb Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 I'm coming to check out Cebu area and if I like it, find a place to rent for 6 months and see how that goes. I'd rather live out side of a city. Any suggessions?? I have a dog and 6 cats. I want to be sure that I want to live there before I make the big move, sell my home in Canada. I'd bring my pets, expensive, but they are mine. The cats are indoor only, if I had a more rural setting with a solid wall, I might let them out. I have a Collie also. I'm wondering what problems animals have there? Fleas? Ticks? I was in Dominican and ticks were just gross. What are the chances of finding a really good Veterinary. I used to raise Maine Coon cats and it is really hard to find a good Vet even at home. Hi I dont know much about cat care here in Cebu, but Vets dont seem to be very good with dogs, regarding Dogs Parvo is the biggest killer especially of young dogs, Rabies is around but rare at least in the cities, Heartworm and Ticks are a regular problem, the ticks can be massive and I would imagine with a colie very hard to remove, my dogs are lab/ dalmation so both are short haired, your dog can get shots for Parvo and rabies Yearly, heartworm tablets are expensive and need to be given monthly however a member on this site guided us toward a treatment that can be purchased very cheaply from most of the agricultural suppliers here called ivermectin, Ivermectin is the main ingrediant found in "Heartguard" a chewable commercial proferlaxis for heartworm prevention, however if I remember correctly Collies are one breed that may have severe side effects from using Ivermectin so have a chat with your Vet before coming here. However since Using Ivermection our dogs no longer get ticks and are protected from Heartworm. Johnb
MikeB Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 There's a pretty good husband-wife vet team that have an office in Central Carcar. They also have an office in Moalboal. He does house calls on his bike to the surrounding area. The wife did the spaying on one of our cats that turned out ok. She showed me the parts she removed; really didn't need to see that, I would have taken her at her word.
TedDBayer Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 where do your dogs pick up ticks, in the city?, do you let them run? I want to rent a house with a fenced yard, but the dog would still be mostly indoors. Ticks give me the heby-gebies, yuck. In the Dominican they were gross, I saw my friend pull about 30 off her dog. johnb Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 (edited) We live in the outskirts of Cebu city, the dogs aren't walked because of the amount of strays around with any number of deseases, we live in our own very large walled compound so the dogs run loose within the compound, they have never worn a collar or been on a lead and live outside all year round, both have great shelters and are looked after very well, we have a large garden put to plants and shrubs, a large parking area concreted and an edge border of gravel, the grass ticks live in the soil and attach them selves to any warm blooded critter that passes them, mostly humans are OK ticks dont seem to like our blood, 30 ticks a day on my dogs was an easy target to find especially after the first rains after a dry period, however this all stopped completely not one tick ever found since we used Ivermectin, like i said earlier you should do some research before using this on your collie, I dont inject my dogs just give the dose orally once a month, see link below regards grass tick in the philippines again the product advertiesed in the link is over priced however the information is useful, http://www.merial.ph/Pets/Dogs/Pages/flea_tick.aspx Johnb Edited December 14, 2013 by johnb

There are pure bred dog clubs and breeder in Philippines perhaps a search would provide some helpful connections. Johnb is correct about heartworm. Our family lost a much loved German Shepard to heartworm. I have bought quality US canned and bag dog food at Talisay and Cebu City Cebu. I understand how pets can be an important part of your family. Good luck and please let us know what you find out. TedDBayer Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Thankyou. I can bring tick stuff from home. I'll have to return home every 6 months for now or loose my medical coverage at home. Ticks are gross. I don't see many at home, but do see them on the dog, never seen one on a cat. I'd hate to have to shave the Collie in order to keep her clean, she's beautiful.

SNAFU Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Allen, TedDBayer, et al, IMO, pets & vets are no problem here. We "adopted" a young pup last May about the same time we started building our new home. Abu is his name, and he is a typical Visayan mongrel, I believe the locals refer to them as "askal" or "aspin". He resembles a foxhound, but with smaller ears, and is medium in build - about 11-12 kilos. He is very obedient and loving, and good with children - he accompanies me unleashed to the sari-sari store across the street from our home, and sits at my feet while I purchase my Red Horse Litros and Jackpots, ha! We've taken Abu to a local vet for rabies, distemper and heartworm treatments, and the service has been very professional and the price quite reasonable. We've kept him leashed and tethered since the visits to the vet, but he doesn't seem to mind, unless his "doggy barkada" of about 4-5 dogs passes by the house. He responds to commands whether they be in English or Ilongo. Funny, we get some jeers from the locals during our walks with Abu, some of them ask if we're interested in a pure-breed, ha! No thanks, we have our Visayan mountain dog. Kind of sad, but you can basically walk the streets and find a pet of your choosing, for free. Tick and flea treatments are readily available. I could go on forever, but won't. That's my duha sentimos, SNAFU
Thomas Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 some of them ask if we're interested in a pure-breed, ha! No thanks, we have our Visayan mountain dog. Yes. pure-breeds can sometimes LOOK better, but much biger chance to get a well behaving CLEVER dog, when it's NOT breeded for the look... Some similar with aristocrat people inbreeding and when some older businessman marry a young beautiful bimbo :mocking: ((I suppouse I never will find as good mixed dog as we bought when I were kid :boogoo: :) A middle size female, Speedy enough to keep same speed as the biger greyhounds (!) when she run just behind them, let them break the air, which she was clever to figuere out. A screwed up man had a screwed up - because normal male dogs don't fight female dogs - MALE german sheepherd dog, which he made attacking other dogs. But my half the size FEMALE dog beat could up that dog anyway!!! He made that dog attack her more than once, when she didn't see him in advance too, but she managed to beat him every time anyway! Lucky for that man I were only 13, because otherwice I would have beat HIM up :1 (72): Although she thought by herself too, she was obidient too. When she was a puppy I walked her without leash to the suburb centre, just told her to stay somewhere when I went into shops. Once I forgot I had brought her, so I had walked half the distance home, before I remember I had forgot her. When I came back, she still sat where I had told her to stay  although she looked some worried, because she had seen I did leave without bringing her.) She didn't bother wild animals either, so no problem bringing her without leash when there were new borns. But once she attacked and killed a poison snake, which went close to our house, so I suppouse she did it to protect us. She got biten by the poison snake, got ill by it, but recovered  I will probably too adopt a stray dog after I have settled rural in Phils.
billygoat993 Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Ticks and fleas are common here given its a tropical country. They get it when walking near the grass or from other dogs. What we do with our German Shepherd is apply frontline every month for ticks, Heartguard every for 6 mos and then go to the Vet for Canimax on tye 7 th Nd continue with Heartguard again since not all parasites or worms are covered by heartguard. We do get shots for her against Parvo and deworming we just do it at the Vet but can be done at home. Most people I saw here have their pets inside the cage and do not walk or play with them. Not much rules about animals here and they do not seem to rescue them as well. In our shop near the national road i saw dogs and cats and i would buy food for them, people will look at me like I am crazy for doing that to stray... Its sad to see dogs limping because they got hit and was just left there, I hate to see that but common here.
