davewe Posted December 24, 2013 Author Posted December 24, 2013 An update: After more back and forth self-debate than such a small amount of cash is worth, I finally decided to send the family $100 for Xmas. They were of course appreciative, as was my wife. The sister issue was even harder to decide but in the end I sent her the grand sum of $20. At 19 years old apparently she didn't have enough ID at the Western Union office, but eventually worked it out by going to another office. Today my wife spoke to the family who once again thanked me for the gift. Mom mentioned that sis Jonna would be traveling home on the 28th for the birthday of the littlest cousin. Jonna told mom that she had treats for all the little ones. When mom asked her poor 19-year old college student how she could afford treats, Jonna gave her the classic Filipina response - "Secret!" I know not all Filipinas are good by a long shot and certainly not all families are. But once again I think I have stumbled onto a wonderful one! Softpillow Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 But with the holidays coming up I would like to give them something.. So far there have been no family money requests. I would really like to help in some little way, but I don't want the requests to start flowing in. In short I really would like to give these small gifts. I just don't want the other stuff that guys complain about to begin. why not pay on their PHILHEALTH? pay on their SSS ? get them a RED CROSS membership card? http://www.redcross.org.ph/membershiptypes take them to the DENTIST?doctor? pay in advance the electric? be proactive to help them. give a GIFT that will last a long time than something thats gone in 5min This is much better help than giving cash I guess, makes sense too that one is mindful about household expenses
